An Obama-Bayh Ticket Wednesday?

An Obama-Bayh Ticket Wednesday?

Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama will stop in Indiana this Wednesday at Concord High School in Elkhart, setting Hoosier political observers aflutter with renewed veepstakes speculation. The visit, confirmed to HPI by Second Congressional District Chairman Butch Morgan, could be to announce the selection of Senator Evan Bayh as Obama’s running mate. He would not say whether Bayh would be in attendance. Democratic sources say Secret Service is working out details with local police that would include a motorcade. The event in Elkhart would draw media coverage in nearby Michigan. Sources say the details appear to be different than a normal presidential candidate visit. Other Democratic sources contend that the visit has been prompted simply by the spike in the county’s unemployment rate following the closure of the Monaco plant, and that veepstakes buzz continues to swirl around Virginia Governor Tim Kaine. HPI reported last week that one informed and reliable Democratic source had indicated that a Vice Presidential selection was imminent, and would be made “within 72 hours” and announced this week. A choice this week would also come days before the beginning of the Beijing Olympics, an event during which a Vice Presidential selection is thought to be unlikely. The Democratic National Convention will begin August 25, the day after the close of August 8-24 Olympic games. (HPI Photo by Ryan Nees)

1. Biggest problem with Bayh
He's a democratic Senator in a state run by the GOP. Therefore if we get close to our 60 vote margin Bayh's seat would possibly be a - 1 democratic senator and getting a new democratic senator in Indiana in a special election would be a difficult race to say the least espicially after an Obama win (in most cases the party in the whitehouse loses seats in the midterm)

2. Biggest problem with Bayh in my book is that he's an anti-gay bigot.
Same goes for Kaine.

6. In which case we would not get closer to 60 senate seats... we would get further from it
I would trade a senate seat for an increased chance at winning the whitehouse. Not that Bayh is my first choice. Of course, I am not the one choosing.

I am still convinced Richardson is the best VP pick, but here I sit at my 'puter in my den typing meaningless posts on a message board while wearing shorts and a torn T-shirt. Don't listen to me.

Why in the hell would he pick a Clinton clone instead of Clinton herself?

4. I don't believe it. But I do commend their ability to string us along....
I also hope that Obama realizes that courting Bayh is not going to score him any points among Michiganders. Quite the opposite in fact. The only state Michigan has a greater distaste for is Ohio. (something about football, I guess ;))

5. But don`t you think Clinton supporters would be more willing to vote for Obama...
if Obama picked someone who had supported Clinton in the primary?

8. I don't understand all these rumors about Bayh as his VP.

Because Obama is touring Indiana for 3-4 days next week, does not mean Obama has chosen Bayh as his VP. I understand why some people want him to choose before the Olympics, but there were reports that Obama was weeks away from deciding and was not in any hurry. I don't think Obama will choose a VP this week and will chose when he's ready.

10. It's coming from the campaign. The deliberate attention is the "handsome parting gift"...
For losers of the veepstakes.

That's what I've come to believe anyhow, which really bums me out 'cause Kaine was my top choice. :(

12.  I'm not saying these rumor are wrong, but I'll wait till I see it.

4 years ago, it was "leaked" that Dick Gephardt would be Kerry VP during the Edward's was chosen.
