Topless Women, Kid Rock, Bikers, And John McCain

Sam Stein
Topless Women, Kid Rock, Bikers, And John McCain

August 3, 2008 04:40 PM

The town of Sturgis, South Dakota will witness, on Monday, the rare fusion of drunken debauchery, public stripteasing, motorcycle rallying, a live performance by Kid Rock, and - last but not least - a veterans-themed speech by presidential candidate John McCain. Seriously.

On Sunday, the McCain campaign announced that the Senator will participate in the Sturgis Rally 2008 at Buffalo Chip in South Dakota, an annual tribute to American veterans. The event is up the Arizona Republican's wheelhouse, attracting thousands of active duty and former servicemen, many who have a natural affinity towards the Senator.

But it is hard not to notice the evocative, non-political sideshows that will literally surround McCain's speech. As the presumptive nominee takes the stage, the "Ringin' Wet & Wild" women's wrestling event will be taking place on the main amphitheater. Two hours before then , the "Miss Buffalo Chip Beauty Pageant - Bikinis on the Beach" will be staged on at a different venue. That affair is described by ESPN's Jim Caple as "essentially a topless beauty pageant. And occasionally bottomless, too."

3. What's funny is that the Sturgis crowd is not the same as the NASCAR crowd--
these folks have money, they're not necessarily the blue-collar, redneck crowd the way you'd think. Lots of wealthy middle-aged men.

his speech. I know not everyone is going to be a fan.

14. A lot of criminal assholes as well
The Laconia Bike Week (the east coast counterpart to Sturgis) attracts a lot of dirtbags from the Hell's Angels and other lowlife gangs. The state trys to paint lipstick on this pig because of the hotel and meals tax revenue (as well as government-run liquor sales), but there are always problems during bike week.

6. You beat me too it.
I was just about to post this, but I did a search and found that you had posted it first.

I find the last paragraph interesting:

. . .
The cultural crossroads that is the Sturgis Rally could actually be fertile political ground for Republican presidential nominee. Hosted in a town of 5,500, the event sees upward of half a million bikers over the course of a week. Many of them, the founder of the campground is quoted as saying, have expressed interest in seeing the Senator, whose POW background makes him a fan favorite. How the religious right will react is a whole other bag.

We can hope that McCain makes a fool of himself with the bikers, but we can also try to bring it to the attention of conservatives, particularly religious conservatives, that he went to appeal for their votes.

The Secret Service agents trying to protect McCain in and around Sturgis during the rally.

Sturgis has always been a must miss if I could possibly avoid it.

10. I almost bought my first house in Sturgis--the rally was the deal-breaker.
It was a yearly pain in the ass for Rapid City and Black Hills in general.

18. LOL Exactly, it can get really rough during that week. I also suspect
most of the bikers will not appreciate the law enforcement interfering with their freedom during that week - lots of pot, etc.

13. I'm not so sure there will be a lot of McNut supporters there.
I don't know about the majority who will be attending Stugis, but I sure can relate the feelings of quite a few bikers, and they see him as McBush! My sons both belong to clubs, and my oldest son has ridden Harley's for quite a few years. One son is 43 and the other 40, and they speak of the Sturgis Rally as the #1 best rally of any year! One is retired Navy and the other is not a vet, but I'll be surprised is McNut gets the reception he's hoping for.

You're right about this driving the SS CRAZY! That will NOT be an easily controlled crowd, and the absolute worst thing that could happen is if someone...anyone...tries to control them! I've been to quite a few Harley rallies myself, and they're a great group of people. They're very friendly; will help anyone who needs their help; and welcome anyone who wants to join the party, but don't try to push them around. If they aren't interested in McNuts, they'll just ignore him, UNLeSS they get hassled!

16. Secret Service must be apoplectic
I suspect Sturgis is a lot like Laconia Bike Week, which means the place will be crawling with a toxic mix of biker gang criminal assholes and intoxicated wannabes.

29. Two things. 1] McCain cannot attract a crowd so he has to go to a captive audience. 2] McCain dearly
needs a connection with the common man.

The way to combat this is to remind everyone about his bizarre elite lifestyle... blowing his Social Security checks and total disability payments (what exactly is his disability?) at the craps table with $1000 bets, loading up his AmEx card with $100K per month, interest free for 9 months at a time or more because of his elite status, and having no plan whatsoever for "entrusting" his wife's enormous beer fortune if (not that it could possibly happen) he's erected.
