Do The Democrats Retain Control Of Senate If Obama and A Senator VP Are Elected? |
|
I know that several senators have been mentioned as possible VP picks, including Biden, Clinton, and Kerry. My question is whether this means that the Senate will then revert to a GOP majority if Obama is elected as President along with a VP who is a Democratic Senator. If so, what are the chances of Obama getting his platform through congress?

1. It depends if the state has a Democratic or Republican governor. |
|
Democratic senators in a red state should be a big NO-NO because of that. People like Biden or Clinton should not be a problem as the two states have a Democratic governor. For Biden, would add the question of whether he can run both for Senator and for VP in Delaware. The answer depends of the state constitution (Lieberman could, but it is not sure if other states can).

2. The Governor of the state gets to name a replacement to |
|
fill out the term. A Democratic Governor would pick a Democratic Senator to replace an outgoing Dem. A repuke would pick a puke. Illinois has a Dem Governor, as does NY for Hillary, and Delaware for Biden, and Mass for Kerry.
Bayh has a Repuke governor, so he would likely be replaced with a puke.
Some states hold special elections, I don't know which ones do.

4. Also, the Dems are set to pick-up 4-10 seats this Fall, |
|
so they should hold the majority regardless, it's just a question of by how many seats.

Yes... Obama's seat would be filled by a dem. His VP pick may result in a loss of one seat. Dems will pick up multiple seats and retain majority. This issue is getting to sixty seats which may be impacted by the VP pick.
My take is they should throw Lieberman out immediately and show some spine.

5. The Democratic Senate majority will increase no matter what. |

Illinois has a Democratic governor who would pick Obama's successor. So do Delaware, New York, and Massachusetts. Indiana does not and is unlikely to acquire one in the upcoming election. A Bayh pick therefore means one seat would switch from blue to red.
However, there are other states where a red-to-blue switch is likely: Virginia, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Colorado, Oregon.

6. First, Obama will be replaced with a Democrat. Secondly, we will obtain many seats |
|
in the elections this fall. Most likely at least five more. Many of the names mentioned also will have Democratic governors.
