Re-create 68: Protesters split weeks before Democratic convention
Associated Press
Friday, June 27, 2008

<snip to>
Spagnuolo warned the Democrats would be to blame if things “blow up.” He later explained that people participating in Re-create 68 demonstrations nearby could spill over to Civic Center park and that he wasn’t implying there would be violence.

“When they make a statement like that, we just can’t ignore it. We have to prepare for the worst,” said Charlie Brown, a Denver City councilman and one of Re-create 68’s most outspoken critics.

Brown said the group puts Denver police in a “no-win” situation where they’ll be criticized if they respond aggressively and if they take a laid-back approach.

Brown also criticized the group for being “selective” about First Amendment rights, noting its protests of the Columbus Day parade.

“They basically hate America, they hate both political parties, they hate capitalism, you can go down the list,” Brown said. “Their real goal is to make it so bad here that no American city will ever want to host a convention.”

Recreate 68’s preparations include an attempt to encircle and levitate the Denver U.S. Mint and shake the money out to spread the wealth — a nod to Abbie Hoffman and protesters who tried to levitate the Pentagon in 1967.

“I think that everybody has a little bit of magic inside them and if we combine our energies, who knows what could happen,” Spagnuolo said.

1. In June, military exercises
were held in Denver for a week...go to you tube, and search out We Are Change, military exercises, Denver...I am not aware that any such thing has EVER taken place in a convention city, PRE convention..I have posed the question several times, and never gotten an answer from anyone on this board...HAS this ever happened in a convention city, BEFORE a convention was held??? and if NOT...then WHY now...???Is there a concerted effort afoot, to cause some sort of disturbance during the Democratic convention?? Doesn't the military commissions act, give* the right to declare martial law in the case of a serious domestic disturbance? there will be those who ha ha, about such a thought..you go right ahead...then remember all those people who were arrested during the Rep. convention in NYC in 2004, and taken to warehouses where they were held...I put nothing past Karl Rove, and I feel that there are those deliberately stirring the ****!!...I put nothing past the opposition...absolutely nothing...and the Dems need to stay alert and aware of everything going on...in order to avoid problems...

The guy says they aren't trying to recreate 68, only the 60's political activism as a whole....ok, then, why the distinct recreate 68 logo??? Then someone else says, that they hate both parties with the same passion....soo tell me, do they plan on protesting the RNC also????...I didn't see that mentioned anywhere....I think the logo is self explanatory, and the intent is pretty clear...(and I hate to mention it, but it seems I've read about another group who might like to see a disturbance at the Democratic convention)wb

2. All good points, I have no idea and why are they protesting only DNC
...why not RNC? Another group? Do you recall what they call themselves?

It really does sound like a deliberate effort to stage disruptions during DNC specifically, almost Rove-ian in nature

of the Denver Group?...they've been stirring up controversy, since the primary race ended...I hate to mention them, but I believe their intent is to cause a situation inside the convention hall...

We all know some people only need the smallest of reasons to start trouble...The Democrats haven't been in charge for 8 years...but recreate 68 figures the Rep's won't listen to them at all and that the Dems might, so the Dems are the prime target..it appears their intentions are not exactly honorable, and there IS potential for trouble...from what I just read, I now believe that the military exercises back in June...were in preparation...a show of power, maybe to discourage confrontation for those paying attention ...it seems recreate68 will welcome just that sort of thing..IF a person can believe what they are reading, that is...I hope the Dems stay especially alert and safe...wb
