Kerry Wins in Landslide, Congress Goes Democratic, Schumer Easily Wins Reelection
Senator John Forbes Kerry of Massachusetts was elected as the next United States President yesterday in an unexpectedly large victory. At presstime, Mr. Kerry and his running mate, Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, had the backing of 374 electors. President George W. Bush had only 141. Official results from Oregon are still forthcoming, but if exit polls are to be believed, Senator Kerry carried the state by a comfortable margin. Elsewhere, the states of Nevada and Colorado were too close to call.
In this year's highstakes contest, turnout is estimated to have surged to 63%. 130 million Americans cast votes this year. At presstime, the Kerry-Edwards ticket carried the popular vote by an surprisingly large margin, and at presstime, the ticket was estimated to have won roughly 55% of the popular vote, translating to 71.6 million votes for the Kerry-Edwards ticket. The Bush-Cheney ticket won 44% of the vote for a total of 57.3 million votes. Ralph Nader's independent candidacy collapsed on Tuesday, collecting only 911,400 votes.
<snip>
In a related development, President George W. Bush and his cabinet committed mass suicide in the wee hours of the morning, poisoning themselves with cyanide. (Okay, just kidding)
