OMFG... Obama actually used the L word!! |
|
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 05:29 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Barack Obama just said the Republicans are lying about what his energy plan calls for.
Not dissembling, prevaricating, being disingenuous, misrepresenting, twisting, stretching the truth, shading, spinning. trimming, telling only half the story, fibbing or saying things that just aren't true.
"Lying."
Obama went on to say, "It's as if they're proud of being ignorant."
So the gloves are off.
There's a long-standing unwritten rule that "lie" and "liar" are not used in national politics. When Kerry called the pugs liars in 2004 in a private conversation captured on a hot mic it was a big TV news story. In 1988 when Bob Dole told GHW Bush to, "Stop lying about my record," people passed out on the spot.
But under Bush II things have gotten to the point where not saying LIAR has become a literary exercise comparable to writing a novel without using the letter "E."
So I whole-heartedly support the end of the L-word ban. (And note the advent of the new "bullshit" ban... it will probably be a few more election cycles before that rhetorical line is breeched.)
As a purely political matter, it will be interesting to see if McCain follows suit.

3. Yes, call the lying republicon liars liars. |
|
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 05:02 PM by SpiralHawk
America already knows it is the truth about republicons.
But it is -- publically at least -- a more or less unspoken truth.
Speaking the truth about republicon lies and propaganda establishes this accurate narrative all the more vividly.

you were going to say "Liberal". I still wonder why a Democrat can not say that they are Liberal. What is wrong in wanting small but effective government that looks out for its people as opposed to big ineffective military government that spies on its people?

21. Actually, McCain Camp Has Been Accusing Obama Of Lying For Some Time Now |
|
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 06:56 PM by Median Democrat
For example, the McCain campaign has stated that Obama is lying by denying that he ever accused McCain of being racist. So, McCain already breached this barrier a while back: http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/08/01/the-filter-august-1-2008.aspx

The more Obama says it, the sooner the MSM will have to report on it. And when they report on it, somebody (somewhere) will finally get the picture that McCain has been a lying sack of shit from day one.
They have to either ignore a HUGE story line or actually do their jobs. Be interesting to see who cracks.

33. Funny that it has gone by without comment |
|
I am sure that most long-time political observers noticed it, but couldn't figure how to comment on it...
Even when Clinton was being impeached for perjury most pugs didn't call him a "liar" on camera. (Some did, most did not)
Kerry never called Bush a liar (publicly) during 2004, and I'm not sure he ever even called the swift-boaters liars. If he did, it didn't stick in memory.
Negative ads with horror movie music and photo-shopped images that imply a candidate is an active member of Al Queada still say "misrepresent."
But most people are not conscious of the of the informal ban, so when Kerry didn't dismiss pugs as liars it implied there was something to what they said. Political speech had moved too far from everyday speech to the point where it was not emotionally authentic.

If Kerry would have come out just one time and called the swiftboaters liars and said it with force, everyone would have understood what he meant.
Truman used straight talk, without all of the niceties of trying to be civil.
Screw that, call it what it is, lying.
