McCain’s Green-Eyed Monster
By MAUREEN DOWD
WASHINGTON

Not since Iago and Othello obsessed on the comely Cassio, not since Richard of Gloucester killed his two nephews, not since Nixon and Johnson glowered at the glittering J.F.K., has there been such an unseemly outpouring of boy envy.

Bill Clinton, Jesse Jackson and John Edwards have all been crazed with envy over the ascendance of the new “It” guy, Barack Obama.

Unlike his wife, Bill Clinton — the master of fake sincerity — still continues to openly begrudge his party’s betrothed.

Asked by Kate Snow of ABC News in Africa whether Obama was ready to be president, Clinton gave a classic Clintonian answer: “You could argue that no one’s ever ready to be president.”

As always, the Big Dog was more concerned with himself — asserting that he’s not a racist — than his party. Bill Clinton is not a racist. We can posit that. But he did play subtle racial politics in the primary. It’s way past time for him to accept the fact that there’s a new wunderkind in town.

Just as Bill Clinton looks at Obama and sees his own oblivion, so does Jesse Jackson. As Shelby Steele wrote in The Wall Street Journal, Jackson and his generation of civil rights leaders “made keeping whites ‘on the hook’ the most sacred article of the post-’60s black identity,” equality pursued by manipulating white guilt.

Now John McCain is pea-green with envy. That’s the only explanation for why a man who prides himself on honor, a man who vowed not to take the low road in the campaign, having been mugged by W. and Rove in South Carolina in 2000, is engaging in a festival of juvenilia.

7. She eviscerates him
“Now somebody else is the celebrity,” the colleague continued, while John looks in the mirror and sees his face marred by skin cancer and looks at the TV and sees his dashing self-image replaced by visions of William Frawley, with Letterman jokes about his membership in the ham radio club and adventures with wagon trains."

Ouch!

12. No, no... THIS is the good part!
Obama wrote his own books, while McCain’s were written by Salter. McCain knows he’s the affirmative action scion of admirals who might not have gotten through Annapolis without being a legacy. Obama didn’t even tell Harvard Law School that he was black on his application.

So it turns out the WHITE guy running for president is the recipient of affirmative action?????!!?! Holy crap!! :bounce:

I absolutely LOVE that.

2. It does Obama no good for his supporters to diss either Clinton
We need the votes of Clinton Dems.

Plus Obama will win because he draws people in rather than shutting them out.

Just look at how he handled the people trying to interrupt his town halls. He is a true leader.

15. I agree if it is gratuitous, but commenting on current things Bill Clinton is doing
is reasonable. Maureen Dowd does go over board - but if she didn't she wouldn't be Maureen Dowd - which is why I hate her columns.

It is right to have concern when he chooses the week that McCain's attack is to accuse Obama of "playing the race card" to validate that by basically saying it happened tohim too.

3. Why MoDo! I didn't know you had it in you! More...
> McCain could dismiss W. as a lightweight, but he knows Obama’s smart. Obama wrote his own books, while McCain’s were written by Salter. McCain knows he’s the affirmative action scion of admirals who might not have gotten through Annapolis without being a legacy. Obama didn’t even tell Harvard Law School that he was black on his application.
>
> McCain upbraids Obama for being a poppet, while he’s becoming a puppet. His mouth is moving but the words coming out belong to his new hard-boiled strategist, Steve Schmidt, a Rove protégé, nicknamed “The Bullet” for his bald pate.
>
> Schmidt has turned Mr. Straight Talk into Mr. Desperate Straits. It’s not a good trade.

Obama's comments about her "snazzy boots" seem to have had a positive effect.

9. I read that she went on the Obama World Tour with the rest of the media...
... and that at one point he leaned over to MoDo and complimented her "snazzy" boots.

Sorry I don't have a linky to the original article, but I read it here. The author of the article seemed to think he had successfully buttered up the Queen Bee. I do hope so. She can be vicious.

17. Not telling Harvard he was black really jumped out at me since
there is a potential talking point du jour out there about affirmative action. From what the right has put forward so far, they have pimped the message that Obama was a recipient of it. Apparently not.

Her bit of info about Obama's law school application may or may not be true.

Former classmates say Obama chose not to mention his race in his application to Harvard Law School to avoid benefiting from affirmative action, an assertion that his campaign declined to confirm or deny.

"His work was with those who didn't have much, and they were black, Hispanic and white," said Gerald Kellman, who hired Obama to help organize poor families in Chicago. "He never had much inclination to use affirmative action as a tool then. He wanted to level the playing field by providing early childhood education programs, access to good schools."

13. Maureen Dowd? Seriously?
All I see is a catty bitch looking to square-peg an election, and poorly. Same as it ever was. McCain's mom is "magical," and Bill Clinton is "the master of fake sincerity"? She phoned it in again. She's mastered paint-by-numbers journamalism.

She's poisonous. Next week she'll be making up Jane Austen-esque nicknames for Michelle Obama. How MoDo continues to rule the most valuable print real estate in the world amazes me.

Edwards "crazed with envy?" Spare me. Dowd is simply filling inches with her unclever one-dimensional snipes.

Dowd doesn't "get it," but even she can smell a faint whiff of it atop her tower of money.

Ha! Its simple penis envy. Holy shit, McCain is hearing himself described as an old coot and its eating him alive...

.... and then Paris described him as the wrinkly old white guy...

ROFL!

25. McLame's handlers better place the bubble around him
soon, else his reading the massive amount of negative press about him, for every stumbling, stoopid statement, might really send him over the edge; he's damn close to it now. The bubble keeps bush from dealing with reality; serves him very well...heh.

27. It's her whiny, talking-in-the-nose voice that really irritates me. Take a damn breath!
And I think she does it to appear superior to it all.

She wasts to trade in gossip while appearing to be above gossip.

Even in print, I can't read her without hearing her whine. Honestly, I would have been slapped at 7 years old for that. Who let her learn to talk like that?
