McCain reverts back to negative, juvenile smears of Obama as celebrity in new attack ad.
McCain: Can Obama 'help your family?'
from First Read by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Mark Murray

A day after his campaign announced it was airing its first positive TV ad in weeks -- even though there were signs that there wasn't much money behind the ad, given the campaign's silence on where it's running -- the McCain camp is back up with a new negative TV ad.

As with the Britney-Paris ad, it calls Obama "the biggest celebrity in the world" (despite McCain's own appearances in "24" and "Wedding Crashers" and a TV movie about him), and it also hits Obama on taxes and spending.

The campaign says the ad be cycled into its buy in CO, IA, MI, MO, NV, NH, NM, OH, PA, VA (NoVA) and WI.

1. did they do focus groups that showed them the "celebrity" jab was really worth it?
It's so tiresome.

4. Because he doesn't have ANYthing *to* bring that would interest those of us on the
end of the trickle down stream.

Pathetic.

5. The news media covers McCain's ads as if we are electing
the President of an ad agency. This seems to stand in for NOT covering McCain's fumbling performance in live events, the under attendance of those events and his shifting and ambiguous stance on the issues.

Coverage of McCains ads as if they were news also allows the MSM to run those ads over and over at no cost to McCain and without declaring their free airings as a campaign contribution.

10. I was thinking the same thing
He doesn't act as if he has firsthand knowledge of his own ads nor what Obama says and does.

I think he is handed a limited script to recite and is told to agree or disagree accordingly.
Any question falling outside of that narrow framework and you get deer-in-the-headlights McCain.

9. Bingo - McCain's Celebrity Ad Is Now Just Repetitious...
...and the only thing newsworthy is that McCain is getting into a tiff with Paris Hilton, yet the MSM is still replaying McCain's ads for free ad nauseum? I could somewhat understand if there was a new take, but there isn't.

As I said before, if you count the free airplay given to McCain's ads, particularly by Fox, it amounts to a billion in-kind contribution. Big Media just give 1 obligatory play of an Obama ad, before they regurgitate the latest GOP talking points.

This is why the Democrats will need to win the election on the ground, not by relying on the 5 corporations that own and control Big Media.

6. The ad goes "that's John McCain". No, that's somebody else not cuddling up to big oil.

8. *** UPDATE ***
*** UPDATE *** Obama spokesman Bill Burton emails this response to McCain's latest ad: "Is the biggest proponent of George Bush's tired, failed policies ready to bring about change? Another day brings another dishonest attack from John McCain. While Sen. McCain knows that Sen. Obama has proposed cutting taxes for 95% of American families, what he's not telling us is that he wants to give $4 billion in tax breaks to the oil companies, continue giving tax breaks to corporations that ship our job overseas, and provide no direct tax relief for more than 100 million middle-class families. It's time to retire these old policies and bring new energy to America."
