Clinton to headline second night of convention

By NEDRA PICKLER
Associated Press Writer

HONOLULU (AP) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton will headline her own night at the Democratic National Convention, Barack Obama's campaign announced Sunday, in a nod to her strong second-place showing in the party's presidential primary.

The former first lady will speak on the second night, Tuesday, Aug. 26 - the 88th anniversary of the women's right to vote. The campaign and convention committee in a statement called her "a champion for working families and one of the most effective and empathetic voices in the country today."

The Obama campaign is trying to avoid hard feelings among Clinton's supporters at their carefully orchestrated convention. But they still haven't reached a deal on whether Clinton will be included in the roll call vote for the nomination, which could make the party appear divided heading into the final stretch of the White House race.

The campaign said Obama's wife Michelle is slated to headline the opening night on Aug. 25, while the yet-to-be-named vice presidential pick will speak on the third. Democratic officials say Bill Clinton is also scheduled to speak that night, but only the headliners were in Sunday's official announcement.

Obama is expected to become the party's first black presidential nominee on the fourth and final night as the convention moves from the indoor Pepsi Arena to a bigger venue at Invesco Field at Mile High stadium. It happens to be the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

2. Was there ever any doubt?
I mean, come on. She gave the GOP a ready-made attack ad in the event she's chosen. 'Even his own running mate doesn't think he's ready to lead our country.'

Anyone who seriously thought there was a chance in hell of her being on the ticket, after her praise of McCain and belittling of Obama, is both naïve and deluded.

6. Why make her out to be a marginalized victim?
Obama's speaking on the anniversary of the "I Have a Dream" speech...does that make it "Blacks' Night"?

10. your conclusion is a superficial reading of those who supported Clinton
and an easy way to dismiss an issue that should be addressed. So to speak.

14. What should be addressed?
That she's been given her own night to headline or that it happens to coincide with the anniversary of the certification of the final state's ratification of the adoption of the 19th amendment. :eyes:

Calling it "women's night" is the issue that should be addressed... Sexists.

21. right back atcha!
The primaries are over. Clinton is an awesome liberal democrat who has been vilifed for decades by the right-wing Rove machine. And now by "progressive" democrats.

Give it a fucking rest already.

26. On the contrary....
your assumption is that every person who supported the Senator sees her as a victim of sexism, I am merely arguing that for most of her supporters that is not true, but there are a few who cling to that notion which (IMHO) minimizes her many accomplishments and does not do her campaign justice...

8. Speaking on the 88th anniversary of the women's right to vote...
is somehow demeaning to you?! Are you really THAT wrapped up in painting Hillary as a victim?
Anyone in their right mind would see it for the honor that it is.

13. Hillary is NO victim,
but throwing her a bone on "ladies' night", if there is also no roll call, is just done to appease her supporters. Ditto for Bill speaking on Wed., funny that the offer hadn't been proffered until the ABC interview.

If Dean & Kennedy had a roll call, despite their meager number of pledged delegates, then Hillary damn well deserves one!!!

18. Ridiculous.
"throwing her a bone" ?! To anyone else it would be an honor. But its not enough for Hillary fans. Nothing is good enough for Hillary Clinton, is it. The opportunity to give an historic speech on a landmark anniversary in womens rights is reduced to "girls night" and "throwing a bone". What a joke.

Furthermore, I dont give a rats ass about when or if Bill speaks at the convention. If not for him, we'd probably be enjoying our 8th year of President Gore right now.

And dont worry. Im sure that Hillary and her 'supporters' will get the 'catharsis' they so desperately need. Let her have her roll call. I couldnt care less. Anything to to keep the tantrum-throwers appeased. Hell... the Clintons will already be dominating every night but one. But its still not enough though, Im sure. :eyes:

15. Nope,
I just think that she more than earned the right to a roll call.

Why should everybody else have a roll call and not Hillary? Dean didn't even garner 200 delegates and he had a roll. Why shouldn't the candidate who came short by only 127 PDs not be entitled to a roll call too?

Is Hillary held to a different standard?

It is GREAT that she is speaking the 88th anniversary of the women's right to vote, demeaning it "ladies night" is disgusting.

Beacool is an awesome democrat who has been on DU for quite some time. And for you to attack her personally is out of bounds and shows perhaps that you need, early this morning, either more coffee or less.

25. Thank you!!!
I find it disconcerting that on a Democratic board the Clintons get bashed more than on the RW sites. It's just mind boggling!!!

I'm glad that Hillary has a night to speak, I'm also thrilled that Chelsea will introduce her. But, and this for me is a big but, I don't want her candidacy to be dismissed as "she did good for a woman". Hillary battled against men and triumphed against all the other men but one, and that loss was by a very small margin.

I want the historical nature of her candidacy to be recognized just the way that the men who came in second place have been recognized in years past: I want her to place her name in nomination and to have a roll call. It will thrill the thousands of people who worked extremely hard to get her elected to hear her name being called out.

I know that Dean and the Obama camp don't want a roll call precisely because it would remind people just how close this primary was, but Hillary has more than earned the right to have one. Furthermore, coercing her not to have one will probably cause a backlash.

This does not mean that anyone should challenge Obama's nomination, it just means that in this historical primary both candidates came very close to winning and both deserve to be recognized. If Hillary had prevailed, I would have expected Obama to have a roll call too. They both have earned it.

:hi:

24. bitter and petty. O bama's speaking on the anniversary of MLK's
"I Have A Dream Speech". Does that mean he's speaking on "black's night".

How profoundly stupid your whine is.

23. Hillary should have her night at the convention.
Edited on Mon Aug-11-08 09:37 AM by TexasObserver
The first two nights are to showcase new talent and recognize old talent.

The last two nights are to pick the VP and coronate the Presidential nominees.
