The phony tough and the crazy brave.
This apt description of the confluence of macho wimps like Bob Haldeman and the certifiable loony G. Gordon Liddy was used to explain how Nixon ended up in disgrace. Sad to say it is an accurate description of the faux John Wayne we have endured in W's 8 year reign and the real war monger we will have in McCain, should he prevail.
The swagger McCain is displaying on Georgia is no put-on. This guy is determined to have a showdown with every one he sees as a rival to US supremacy. This mentality would be dangerous at any time. Now with contention for oil and other essential raw materials rising and the emergence of wealthy, well-armed nations unwilling to be cowed by us, the election of a belligerent, chip-on-the shoulder hot head is incredibly dangerous.
When McCain returned from Vietnam, he threw himself into studying that war to see what went wrong. It is clear that the conclusion he drew is to deploy military force without regard to political considerations or geo-political realities. McCain sees his presidency as the opportunity he has craved to prove out his theory that he knows how to win wars.
McCain is giving us all a preview of the dark days to which he wants to return. This failed fly-boy has no grasp of how debilitated our armed forces are after the tragic malfeasance of the Bush regime. He cares not a whit for the nuanced understanding of our weakened position in world affairs As bad as W and Cheney have been, McCain is letting us know that when the phony tough Bushies are replaced by this crazy brave crew the world will be significantly more frightening place.

3. I am begining to think that it is even worse than your clear dark assessment

I no longer think that he has any ambition to actually BE a president, he just wants to win an election.

I doubt that he has any intention of spending the long hours to master the subjects and thinks that he can simply call in a bunch of folks and agree with the most militaristic view in the room.

4.  I am usually a pretty optimistic guy but Top Gun McCain has
really unnerved me. When he made the pronouncement that he knew how to win wars, I though what an odd thing to say. But watching him during the Georgian situation, I realize that he means it and is anxious to demonstrate his strategies for military superiority to the world. Your point about not spending the time necessary to properly understand an issue is spot on. Who would have thought that there could be anyone less intellectually curious than W. And yet we have someone who may be as dumb and seems to be completely untroubled by his ignorance.
