McCain Camp's Defense Against Sturgis Beauty Pageant Critics: He Was A POW!

By Eric Kleefeld - August 15, 2008, 2:16PM

The McCain campaign has offered a novel defense against critics who hit him for offering up his wife Cindy as a contestant at a topless biker beauty pageant: He was a POW!

This whole mess started when Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, who is heading up an independent group of pro-Obama pastors -- and, by the way, officiated at Jenna Bush's wedding -- criticized McCain's remarks at the Sturgis rally: "My personal opinion, and based on my opinion of the Christian faith, that's not the type of expression a presidential candidate or anyone following the Christian faith ought to make."

The Wall St. Journal reports that McCain spokesman Brian Rogers fired back by saying that Americans "know that John McCain's faith and character were tested and forged in ways few can fathom."

I believe we now have a "POW card" which McCain plays daily.

As someone in the TPM thread said:

A noun: Check
A verb: Check
A POW reference: Check

That campaign is running with machine like efficiency.

9. "Victim Card." The POW excuse works for his physical limitations, but
both candidates have been tested in ways I can't imagine as a WASP woman who never saw combat.

McSame wants to play the victim every time. It's all he has.

2. That was also Hannity's excuse for McCain cheating on his first wife

"BUT HE WAS A POW FOR 5 1/2 YEARS!!!"

As if by saying that, he isn't responsible for anything he does.

So whe he 'accidentally' pushed the button as President, or starts another war, his supporters will say:

"BUT HE WAS A POW FOR 5 1/2 YEARS!!!

4. If he's so mentally fucked up that he's STILL making poor choices due to being a POW, then
what does that say about his fitness to be President?

6. You just noticed that now?
I've been saying it since they started pushing him. My YouTube commentaries show discussions like this for the past 6 months for example:

FReep: "Did you know he was a Vietnam Veteran???"
Me: " NO!!! No way! It's not possible!"
FReep: "No! OMG! It's TRUE!" He was A POW!!!"
Me: "I've never heard that before! Maybe you should repeat this every two minutes instead of every five!...it'll make dodging the issues all the easier."
FReep: "OMg FU YOU LIBERAL COMMIE BASTURD..."
Me: "Yeah...thinking about the issues will do that to you..."

7. No. I've noticed it for a long time. Hopefully now though, since he has used it so often and as a
way to dismiss any criticism of him, it will become just like the Rudy 9/11 meme. That would be helpful.

10. he also uses it to explain his crappy taste in music:
Speaking to Walter Isaacson at the Aspen Institute in Colorado on Thursday, McCain found himself explaining a recent interview with Blender Magazine in which he selected ABBA’s 1976 track “Dancing Queen” as his favorite song.

“What were you thinking?,” Isaacson asked him, looking incredulous.

“If there is anything I am lacking in, I’ve got to tell you, it is taste in music and art and other great things in life,” McCain joked. “I’ve got to say that a lot of my taste in music stopped about the time I impacted a surface-to-air missile with my own airplane and never caught up again.”

11. Velied attempts at an appeal to tradition?
But that can be expected from a dinosaur like Mccain (ok this part was an ironic joke to myself, lol)

14. Just freakin' kill me.
Are we going to have to put up with the POW defense every time McCain gets a question that makes him uncomfortable?

Obama should contact a 527 and let them rip on John 'Songbird' McCain. Let the air out of that balloon, prontissimo.

16. Take it from a McSame constituent: YES. It's been his SOP for decades
and with precious few exceptions, it's worked.

It's all he has.

15. I'm at a complete loss here...
Did his aides just not inform him about the details of the pageant? Or did he know and still make the suggestion?

*shakeshead*

17. A noun, a verb, POW status.
Hannity tried to use the same poppycock to bail him out for cheating on his wife.

the POW card:

"I was a POW, I can do any damn fool thing I want and don't have to take responsibility."

let's see how that one flies.
