Who's rich? McCain and Obama have very different definitions

To Pastor Rick Warren's question, Obama says someone making more than $250,000. McCain gives a figure of $5 million per year. His campaign says he was joking.

By Greg Miller, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
August 18, 2008

On almost every issue, the two presidential candidates have staked out opposing positions. Their contrasting views on wealth surfaced during their back-to-back appearances in Southern California on Saturday night when each was asked to define "rich."

Obama didn't hesitate. "I would argue that if you are making more than $250,000, then you are in the top 3, 4 percent of this country," he said. "You are doing well."

McCain took a far more discursive approach to answering the question but ultimately settled on a dramatically higher figure: "I think if you're just talking about income, how about $5 million?"

The Arizona Republican quickly added that he was "sure that comment will be distorted," and his campaign said Sunday that he was joking.

Why did the asshole say it if he new it would be taken out of context?

It is time this country get serious about the serious problems we face and McCain continues to clown around.

7. How do the Republicans do it.?
How do they convince the masses that their candidate is 'just one of them' and a good-ole-boy? The Bushes, the McCains---2 of the wealthiest families in the country. McCain with 10 palatial homes, his own private jet, $500 Italian shoes, Cindy's designer wardrobe and they convince the lower/middle classes that Obama is the elitist candidate???? And why don't the Dems make a commercial showing all these homes and the jet and ask the question "McCain is just like you???"

12. My guess is the joker gag is to endear him to his followers
Remember in 2000 and 04, bu$h's lack of speaking skills "endeared" him to the people?

This has to be a similar line of endearment.

8. This POW thing...
Edited on Mon Aug-18-08 08:43 AM by zb1965
Can someone help me understand this POW thing and why is he so proud of it ??? Where I am coming from it's kind of shame when you get cought by the enemy or when you surrender. I live in this lovely country for 11 years now and I have been citizen for 5 years now but I still don't understand why would you want to be so proud of it plus express yourself publicly that you did not want to get out of that prison.
Is the prison where McShame belongs to ???

9. This has been his ticket to fame and fortune
He was a f--k-up Nanal officer, bottom of his class at Annapolis, Father and Granfather were Admirals so he got preferential treatment, was a hot dog pilot who crashed his plane in Vietnam. However, he was tortured terribly as a POW and most importantly for his legend, he refused to leave when the N. Vietnamese offered it to him. I remember the day he returned with all the other POWs, stepped off the plane- it was televised- and the rest is history. 30+ yrs later and he still is using it as the answer to every question he is asked and his excuse for any negative thing he has done in his life ever since (like leaving the first wife for Cindy). People still just eat it up and he can get tears in his eyes on cue, like the other night with Warren.

11. And the Obamas are considered the elitists
Check out this paragraph from the cited article:

"The candidates' answers may stem, in part, from their financial circumstances: From 2000 to 2004, before he began earning substantial royalties from his books, Obama and his wife reported income of between $207,000 and $275,000 on their tax returns. By contrast, McCain's wife's wealth has been estimated at more than $100 million."

It's surprising more reporters haven't picked up on the contrast between the two candidates in terms of wealth.
