Does Biden need to swing by Pakistan on his way home from Georgia?
Edited on Mon Aug-18-08 10:17 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
He could still be back by Wednesday of the convention, if there's any pressing need for him to be there Wednesday. :eyes:

On a related note, the collective national yawn over Musharraf being forced out of office is amazing to me... it's on par with the Georgian mess as a change in the status quo.

1. I couldn't agree more. We ignore the turmoil in Pakistan at our own peril. nt

2. No explosions, no story. ("If it bleeds it leads")
I woke up to see Mushie's military escort leading him out of his offices... then back to some missing toddler.

3. My husband isan-ex-pat Indian, so we pay lots of attention to that part of the world.
We both got a chill when Massoud was assassinated in Afghanistan. He said at the time there was more to come--and two days later, he was sadly proven correct.

:scared:

4. I don't know - Russia, NATO, Pakistan - lots of places he could visit.
Given the other story on DU this morning about Rice having trouble arranging a plane due to Cheney taking one for fundraising, I'm impressed Biden was able to get there so fast. Reports before were that he'd be back "Monday" but I don't know if that meant back in the U.S. or leaving Monday their time. Seems like as long as he's over there he might check in with Pakistan, though he was there earlier this year (Feb?) so maybe he can just call them.

6. Biden's my first Veep choice. I'm less upset that HE personally isn't planning to stop by
Pakistan than I am at this administration's stark refusal to pay any attention to what's going on in that region.

It's a powderkeg and a half and the US barely pays lip service, if even that, to it.

Biden has been proactive on the region, speaking out when others who should, didn't. Bhutto was assassinated, now Mushie's been led out in chains--and we get a big, fat, collective yawn from DC. Not good, not good at all.

7. At this point I think BushCo is just running down the clock and cashing the checks. nt

8. Yup. It's never been clearer that he never, ever gave a damn about this country.
A growing shitsorm in Asia? Who cares, there's brush to be cleared in Crawford.

5. I think it would be an excellent idea.
He had good communications with Musharraf and Bhutto, and with the goings-on in that area, we need to establish a rapport with the current government and whomever Musharraf's replacement will be.

I don't trust (obviously) the current administration to do the right thing. I remember Biden complaining that Bushco didn't have a Pakistan policy, it had a Musharraf policy. We need a Pakistan policy.

9. It's right across the pond.
I'm not sure who he'd meet with, though.
