Speculation: Obama to be in Chester, VA on Thursday morning...
Edited on Tue Aug-19-08 12:07 PM by Kristi1696
For a, yet to be announced, closed door event at John Tyler Community College.

Now what would Obama be doing 19 min. south of Richmond on Thursday morning?

This is all a bit of fun, isn't it?

ETA: If this is true, remember that you heard it on DU FIRST!

1. Well, I heard he's going to Mars Friday for a major announcement.
It could be Rep. Marvin

2. Cool
Right down the street from where I work. Too bad it's closed to the public.
VA would go dem if Kaine was VP choice. If nothing else VA's love their own.

3. You might stop into your local Obama office...
And offer to volunteer and ask if they've heard about any *upcoming events* near you. ;)

16. Hmm, maybe Obama will fly to Iowa after his VA events
it fits nicely to announce VP in Iowa, the place that propel him to the lead in the Primaries...this is a special place for Obama.

8. What difference does that make?
Kerry announced John "The Cheater" Edwards in Pennsylvania.

Edwards didn't have jack to with Pennsylvania.

11. It means what you want it to mean.
Would Obama announce somebody else in his good friend's state? I'm not so sure of that.

Would Virginians be pleased with an announcement in their state of somebody who is not one of their own?

It's all speculation.

18. The Thursday event is not on the schedule.
Obama's plans in VA on Thursday have been kept a secret all week. So this event, which may or may not happen, is a bit different. And given it's the only place we've heard Obama might be on the day he's widely expected to announce his VP pick...

13. Local news station in VA has also picked up on the Chester, VA Thursday rumor.
Posted Tuesday 8/19 11:40am

CBS 6 has heard that Obama is making plans for a stop in Chester Thursday morning. The event is supposed to be "closed", meaning no general admission for the public. The local paper apparently has heard this too.

You wouldn't think that a Presidential nominee would be holding closed events if he's just announced his VP candidate, would you? You'd think the more cheering people, the more waving signs and banners, the better, as the candidates are running toward their convention in Denver next week? What good would a closed event be for publicity and momentum.

By the way, as much as we're closely watching the calendars of these candidates, we're keeping our eyes open for smokescreens and diversions. Maybe a small event like this whispered event in Chester is such a diversion. After all, you wouldn't hold a big event and get hundreds of people all worked up and excited if you were going to cancel it at the very last minute?

Just thinking sneaky here, because it's happened that way before.

-- Chip Mahaney, CBS 6 News Director

Even if this is just a diversion, it's still exciting to see how the campaign works.

to cover for another. Since it is closed it means that no locals are going to be disapointed if the event doesn't happen.

Or Obama may want to talk about Community Colleges and be doing something with the media an the faculty there.

19. Indeed. But it's the first we've heard about his plans on Thursday...
So it's a bit exciting.

I enjoy this little strategy game the campaign is playing. We'll know soon enough, so why not have a bit of fun speculating in the meantime?

23. It's a joke
the southside of the river catches hell for being redneck/country compared to the our-asses-don't-smell people in the City (the rich white ones) and the other main county here (Henrico).

But my buddies and I whenever we see a uh neckish person we say "Straight outa CHESTER!!" (like straight outa Compton)

That Chester is full of "hardworking Americans, white Americans" and that Obama might go there with someone he perceives could help him with that electorate?

31. Most of VA Is a Joke
I live in Fairfax in Northern VA and find the rest of the state to be a bunch of rednecks and hicks. Talk about shitholes . . drive through the city of Richmond. Awful! I can't imagine Obama announcing a VP candidate there.

Please don't generalize all of Richmond as 'rednecks and hicks.' How would you like it if I said all people in Northern VA had sticks up their asses and look down on other people? People are people, regardless of geography.

30. Obama will hold rally in Chesapeake, VA Thursday night.
Looks like he's planning to spend the entire day in Virginia. If it's not going to be a VA veep, it ain't gonna happen on Thursday.

13News' partners at the Virginian Pilot report Sen. Obama will hold a rally at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapesake Thursday night, a day after he appears with U.S. Senate candidate Mark Warner in Martinsville.
