First, Chuck Berry and Jackson Browne; now Rosanne Cash . . .
Edited on Tue Aug-19-08 12:57 PM by janet118
Roseanne Cash, daughter of the late country western singer Johnny Cash, is objecting to the use of his name to bolster McCain's (or anybody's) candidacy.

The Washington Post reports that at a pro-McCain concert earlier this month, Rich declared: "I'm sure Johnny Cash would have been a John McCain supporter if he was still around," before he played Cash's "Walk the Line." Rosanne Cash says she knew her father pretty well and that "even I would not presume to say publicly what I 'know' he thought or felt." She says, "It is unfair and presumptuous to use him to bolster any platform."

Gee, I wonder how ABBA feels about McCain naming "Dancing Queen" his favorite song?*

*Note: I heard a report that McCain blamed his lame choice of music on his being . . . wait for it . . . a POW. According to McSerialLiar his musical taste froze at the point he was shot down in Vietnam. Unfortunately for him, Dancing Queen came out in 1975, two years after his release in 1973. McCain definitely needs a "Secretary of Keeping Timelines and Details of Lies Straight"

7. Here's a quote from the ABBA interview from CNN
MC CAIN ON CNN: "A lot of my taste in music stopped about the time I impacted a surface to air missile with my own airplane."

Noun, verb, adverbial phrase, POW!!!

: "If there was only a candidate who was hit by a missile and loved the Velvet Underground, the country would be set."

9. Johnny Cash Fan Weighing In Here . . .
Johnny Cash was almost the lone country music singer against the Vietnam war, and in the book "The Man Called Cash," by Steve Turner (EXCELLENT book!) it says Johnny Cash endorsed Al Gore in 1988 & 2000, and Al Gore nominated Cash for the Kennedy Center Honors Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. And on page 233 there's this excerpt:

"One of the last times I talked to him, we spoke about teh war in Iraq," says Kris Kristofferson. "I said that we should just go to the table and say that this can't go on because it wasn't going to help us to bomb the country into oblivion. He said, "I'm with you this time. We're bombing a tribal people."

Johnny Cash was as anti-war as you get, and there is NO WAY IN HELL Johnny would ever endorse mcmummy or the sue of his name and music for the continuation of this murderous regime.

23. Yes, Cash was definitely against the Iraq War
From 2006 Rosanne Cash Rolling Stone interview:

Compounding the problem was her public opposition to the war in Iraq, which angered many of her father’s admirers. “I got so much hate mail,” Cash says. “Invariably, they would say, ‘Your father’s a real American, and you should go sleep with Sadaam.’” Ironically, Johnny Cash himself was adamantly against the war. “It broke his heart, it really did,” she asserts, claiming that her father was “addicted” to war coverage on CNN during his last months. “We talked about it in every single conversation we had,” she says. “He was almost a Quaker in his pacifism. He thought there was never a reason for war — and he had felt that way, he told me, since the Vietnam War.”

20. Oh yeah, Johnny Cash sings country and we know all those country singers are repukes
:grr:

Johnny Cash sang country back when Country had meaning and depth to it, not like this crap done by Toby Keith and Lee Greenwood.

It'll be interesting to see what McCain picks for 'his song' (you know the song they play after they finish the acceptance speech).

21. Yeah, this sure sounds like a McCain supporter...
Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

As Clark walks up to the stage, Johnny Cash can be heard singing "I Won't Back Down."

24. Actually, "Dancing Queen" wasn't released as a single in the USA until 1976
so McCain is even further off than he realizes.

At the time McCain was released in 1973, he would never even have heard ANY ABBA songs AT ALL. The band didn't form until 1970, and they didn't have their first US hit, "Waterloo" (the Eurovision Song Contest winner that made them stars beyond Sweden) until 1974.

Gramps is either too senile to remember that he only first heard ABBA after being released prison and not before, or he's just plain lying. Either that, or Vietnamese war prisons of the early 1970s were in the habit of piping parochial Swedish pop music into the prisoners' cells as a torture technique.
