Dear Barack:

Memo from “X” to Barack Obama about Biden“

Biden is deeply thoughtful, serious, passionate, experienced, highly knowledgeable, and incredibly sensible and clear when talking about major issues. He has a vast and creative understanding of politics and policy, a sharp mind, and a sincere heart. He’s totally ready to be president. Together, Obama and Biden would represent the best of the last 30 years of the Democratic Party, and the hope for the next 30.”

“Biden may be a ridiculous, overbearing blowhard, and he’ll doubtless make foolish blunders and imprudent comments if he’s on the ticket, but he’d still be an excellent campaigner, surrogate, and debater. He’d be thrilled at the prospect of being vice president (his own aspirations aside), and grateful and proud to have been chosen–he’d work hard to make Obama look good, and not deliberately outshine him–plus the chemistry will be appealing, and they genuinely like and respect each other, which will be winningly apparent.”

“Also, America is no longer a place where citizens care about plagiarism or hair plugs. A Biden pick would immediately elevate Obama’s gravitas, give him a semblance of humility, delight the media, and reassure the nation that a grownup is involved. Democrats would be simultaneously relieved and apprehensive, but they’d be pleased with the choice overall. Plus, Biden is Catholic, is a Washington insider in a good way (a hardworking man of the people unchanged by three decades inside the Beltway), and has an endearingly tragic history with a happy ending.”

1. Biden is change?
He's been in congress as long as I've been alive - and I'm at least a summer chicken.

3. My letter to Barack
Dear Barack:

Forgive me for being so presumptuous as to share my thoughts with you regarding your choice for Vice President. But it's important to me and millions of other Democrats because we are desperate to see you win in November, and your choice of VP is likely to be critical in this election.

Your choice should be someone who complements you, not someone who is chosen to offset what others perceive as a weakness. Americans are far more interested in competence and judgment these days than they are in Beltway experience. So no sitting Senators or Representatives. In any event, we need as many Democrats in Congress (particularly the Senate) as possible to help you pass your legislative proposals. In fact, your best choice would be someone who made a name for himself or herself outside of politics--a business owner, a farmer, a soldier rather than a career politician.

Your choice should be someone who can relate to the American people in an authentic, honest way. Someone who will earn the respect of bankers on Wall Street, farmers on Main Street, and servicemen and women on Al Rashid Street in Baghdad.

Your choice should be someone who can articulate your ideas and proposals in an honest, straightforward way that will resonate with voters all over the country, but particularly in swing states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Colorado. Frankly, it's less important to have someone who is on all fours with every Democratic plank issue than it is to have someone who will appeal not just to Democrats but to independent and some moderate Republican voters as well.

Finally, your choice should be someone who is competent and shows good judgment, just like yourself. Regarding foreign policy expertise, there are many qualified individuals with long time Beltway experience who can help in that arena, people who could serve as members of your Cabinet or as close advisers. What what would help you more is not a wizened old veteran on international affairs, but someone whose life before politics, like yours, involved travel to other countries and understanding other cultures (especially if that someone was fluent in a foreign language, like Arabic, for instance).

With these key factors in mind, I have three suggestions, any of which would (IMHO) help you tremendously: they are Brian Schweitzer, Governor of Montana, Wesley Clark, retired U.S. Army General, and Mark Warner, ex Governor of Virginia.

Whomever you choose, I will support you and your campaign. But I believe these are three best candidates who can help you win and bring about the change that is the central theme of your campaign.

4. "Ridiculous overbearing blowhard" pretty much would make me run
screaming away, if I were Obama looking for a governing partner.
