For me, this photo captures just how much of a grasping, belly-crawling sellout McCain truly is.
Once upon a time, from the 2000 primaries to just before the end of 2003, McCain made no secret of his disdain for the hard-right Fetus-Firsters who dominated the GOP base, and he despised Bush to such a degree that he cobbled together a half-assed campaign finance reform and got it passed, just so he could watch Bush hold the signing pen and squirm.

Bush had to sign it, the politics of the day demanded it, but the GOP base hated that bill and screamed bloody murder when Bush didn't veto it. McCain just sat back and enjoyed the view, with a smile on his face that looked like the grill on a Mack truck.

He hated these people, mostly for what went down in South Carolina. Recall that McCain absolutely annihilated Bush in New Hampshire, just destroyed him, and a lot of the big-time GOP people who'd gotten on board with George were suddenly left wondering if they'd backed the wrong horse. The alarm klaxons began to hoot, and all attention fell upon South Carolina.

When the dust had settled, the general consensus was that the campaign run against McCain by Bush was a mortal lock to win first-ballot election into The Dirtiest Gutterball Elections Hall of Fame. They called Cindy McCain a whore and a drug addict (before anyone knew the addict part was actually true, so that makes them bad people, got it?).

They spread rumors that McCain was fathering Black children all over the countryside, and they dug up that demented psycho Vietnam veteran so he could accuse McCain of being crazy from torture, and worse, of having collaborated with the Viet Cong while a POW in return for easier treatment.

It worked. McCain got wiped out and never recovered. He spent the next two years seething at Bush and his dizzy legions of useful-idiot evangelical voters. He had plenty of reason to despise them, and like I said, he made no secret of it.

But then, late in 2003, McCain felt what Lincoln called "the gnawing of that presidential grub," and realized he wanted to go for the brass ring in 2008.

So he cozied up to Bush.

And he cozied up to the base.

And in the last year, he has absolutely repudiated any and all formerly-held positions if they were offensive to the base. He dumped his environmental concerns, his immigration reform plan, tried to pretend he actually hadn't sponsored that campaign finance bill, nor had he actually voted against making Bush's tax cuts permanent, etc. Nope, never happened, go away, I was a POW, bla bla bla...

In short, he cozied up to the people who called his wife a whore and an addict, who called him a traitor, right there in front of everyone in the world and loud enough to cost him the election. He cozied up with those people. Those people.

A person who willingly perddles their ass to their own mortal enemies is a person who will peddle anything, no matter how valuable or sacred or necessary to the nation that thing may be, if it helps get him what he wants.

He's a sad, sick, sorry excuse for a human being, as you'll see in this photo. Here, McCain has just taken the stage at that Saddleback thing this weekend. He's about to do his big pitch to that segment of the GOP base he has to capture if he wants to win...but all that venomous history makes me look twice at that smile splattered across his face.

That is the top-dog-bull-moose-gold-medal-world-heavyweight-champion of shit-eating, egg-sucking bullshit grins. There hasn't been this much fake in one place since Pamela Anderson got her implants removed.

That is the living definition of "Fraud."

That:

...is John McCain.

33. He even admitted it in his book that he "wrote" - well, yeah, with that other guy.
and we have him saying so in his own voice, since obviously he got a books-on-tape deal to go with it. He said he didn't want to run for president because he wanted to make any big changes in the country or lead the country in any particular way according to some vision he had for the country. He just realized he wanted to be president because he had an ambition to BE president.

And yet he's the first and loudest one to point the finger at Barack Obama for having ambition enough to run for president.

You point that finger, mcsame, and you know what happens when you do that, dontcha? It means you've got at least three fingers on that hand pointing back at your miserable, selfish, belligerent, "more ME please" self.

That sordid exercise at Saddleback last Saturday inspired me, too.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x6670905

I think it's inspired a LOT of us.

42. Shows you how powerful the fear card is.
And they're playing it all over the place. Fear of terr'ists. Fear of a black president. Fear of Muslims. Fear of commies. Fear of them Russkies. Fear of swarthy skinned men with funny names. Fear of "THEM" "taking over." Fear of their own shadow. Ridiculous. My husband says - just like Cafferty did a short while ago - that if the American people are scared so stupid that they fall for this shit AGAIN, our country and our fellow citizens deserve what they're gonna get.

Unfortunately, of course, it would also mean that's what WE are gonna get, too, even though we fought against it and tried to keep it from happening.

Pitt's OP was spot on. Looking at McCain the other night, I saw a face with heavy make-up that could not disguise the look of disgusting, power-hungry evil. I sat there wondering what drug they gave him to be so coherent. It must be the same thing they've given Bush* when they want him to appear lucid - you know, Presidential-like. Their version of mentally sound and intelligent.

I'm the chair of my local Democratic Party so I've got my hands full with candidates, canvassing, and maintaining a Party website that serves as the community's progressive voice. Both daily newspapers are conservative and are hesitant to publish any positive news about Democrats, so I update the front page of the site with stories and commentary that appeals to the progressive community. But damn, it's a lot of work! You should visit it sometime. It includes tons of videos, some galleries, and I've actually started archiving the daily front pages.

As his constituent for nearly 30 years, I can't express in words how repulsed I am by the thought of him in the White House and as Commander-in -Chief.

His only agenda is revenge; the rest of his agenda will be left up to the K Street coddling lowlifes that have surrounded him for decades; old boy network Republicans up to their necks in shady Arizona scandals.

America, if you love your country, don't vote for this man--he DOESN'T love his country; he feels the US abamdoned him at the Hanoi Hilton even as many of us fretted and remembered those POWs every day of our lives than.

IOW would it be kosher for the Obama campaign to highlight the slander Bushco levied against McCain in 2000, and then rhetorically boggle at his willingness to embrace them? Or would that be too out of character for Obama, since it's not really policy critique.

for his "Ambition" to be President.
Keith then quoted from McSame's own book from 2002, in which he admitted to his own "ambition" to be president..in no uncertain words. His embracing of those who trashed him and his family are a further testament to the man's naked ambition. He obviously wants to win at any and all costs. Obama is a "celebrity"--like McSame wishes he were.

Obama is a "rock star"--this from the guy who's been on Saturday Night Live and in the abysmal "Wedding Crashers."

Obama draws enormous crowds of people who can't even vote for him--McSame can barely draw a hundred to a campaign event.

Obama has unified and energized his party like few have in recent memory--McSame has to rely on the lazy, e-mail fed press to spin the perpective otherwise.

36. fantastic
I'd like permission to post this on our Drinking Liberally website as well as pass around with writer's credit, of course, via email. also send it to our local paper if you don't mind. I'll wait to hear back from you.

I dugg it -- please do this everyone who diggs. here's the link:

http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/No_Regard_For_Truth_or_Integrity

or those who don't digg yet, it's a good form of activism that only takes a few minutes...you can vote up a news or editorial or whatever and then more people read it. I've posted a lot of things from DU there and it's satisfying to see that 100 people or more read it or watch it who wouldn't have otherwise. Well, that's only the people who recommend it -- so freepers are getting an eyefull, too:-)

yes, I've been saying he projects like mad -- that's the repug way. whatever they say or do, they are projecting....so always check their closet when you hear them accusing our guy of something.

thanks again for the great article. so well written.

That sentence summed his cheezy, sleazy, hacktastic, panderiffic performance up in an apt way. It used to be easy to feel a little empathy for this guy. It's getting easier to seriously dislike him in the worst possible way. There he is, happy to be there. Center of attention, and ready to say whatever has to be said to the rubes. It's a happy face, but it ain't pretty.

55. K&R.
Although I'd add in the fact that the Bush campaign implied McCain's adopted daughter (from Bangladesh) was illegitimate.

56. This picture does say it all
To me it says slimy, washed up lounge singer. He still thinks he's hot and he's got it, but even the drunks know he can't sing.

What a fraud that man is. And shame on us that this election is even remotely close.

57. Looking at that photo, ASSCLOWN comes to mind
I NEVER thought I'd say this but, if it's humanly possible, McCain just might be shallower than Bush.

God help us all if we wind up with this assclown and four more years.

58. When McCain was campaigning in SC in 2000,
I went to see him. I came away very much impressed with him. But not enough to vote for him and not Gore. McCain has become the very opposite of what he was then. I still have trouble understanding why the man changed as he did. Then I realize that he has become the candidate that will say and do anything to become president.

62. I have seen that look before.
Early 90's. Manhattan midtown. 3-Card-Monte shill.

Something tells me that the shill had better intentions and a smidge more integrity. Most certainly he was more clued into his surroundings, the date and the time of day. I doubt the shill was wearing Depends. Unlike some candidates we know.

63. McCain: the scum in the scumbag!
I'm so glad some DEMOCRATS realize what a low life no-soul scumbag for sale they are up against. This man is desperate-- NOT for America but for himself. He wants to die as "Pres." Remember, HE went to Sen. Dahel and asked him to see if Kerry would take him as VP running mate in 2004. And when Bush offered him 2008 support, he went with the seeming winner. THAT'S WHY HE LOVED LIEBERMAN SO MUCH: BECAUSE THEY ARE BOTH CUT FROM THE SAME CONDOM!

And his campaign isa a gathering-- not of eagles-- but of pigeon sh-t!

These frauds conned Saakasvili to attack South Osetia so they could have a NATIONAL SECURITY EVENT because McCain was failing to make the polls score they deemed needed before the conventions. Why not? Saakasvili was dumb enough to think that if he pays them off as lobbyists, they wouldn't lie to him....Guy's dumber than you could imagine. That's why he has to be such a violent mafioso in his Mafia nation!

65. Pastor Rick Warren is a Liar and Ambushes Obama
I blogged about it today:

Senator Obama’s campaign did exhibit some naivety last weekend when the candidate walked into an ambush at Pastor Rick Warrens Saddleback mega church. It was a hoax and he fell for it. The Republicans baited Obama with “Rev.” Warren. Evidently he walked in expecting a “Man of the Cloth” to play fair, and for his opponent to play fair as well. How foolish.

Warren, opened up by saying that there was a “Coin toss” and Obama drew first up. (Tails on both sides of that coin I’m sure). Then Warren proclaims that they have Senator McCain secluded off stage in “Cone of silence.” We now know that that statement was untrue. Yes, it was bullshit. McCain was not even in the building - he was in a car, so for him to make that statement means Warren was either gravely uninformed, or lying and an accomplice in the ambush of Senator Obama.

When Senator McCain came on stage he laughed off the question of whether he was comfortable in the cone of silence, because he was not there. And while the Obama campain will not say directly that McCain got advanced notice of the questions - I will. There is enought circumstantial evidence for me to conclude that McCain and Warren participated in a “high-tech lynching. Obviously, the purpose of Pastor Warren’s driven life is to get Republicans elected by any means necessary.

The Obama campaign was right in declining McCain’s offer to attend townhall style meetings for this very reason. The Republicans are ruthless and will lie and cheat without conscience, and then celebrate victoriously when they, once again, fool their base. It serves no purpose for Senator Obama to walk into these traps or to appear on Fox News. Expecting a fair shake, or integrity from the Republicans, even religous ones, is an act of naivety I hope he doesn’t repeat.

67. Ambition = Uppity
In the world of bigots, racists and the elite, when you call a black man ambitious, it is code for uppity. Someone has to step up and call McScum out for these racist attacks.
