the vice presidency is not worth a bucket of warm piss
the selection of a vice-presidential candidate, is, first and foremost, an opportunity to make a colossal mistake.

beyond that, as far as the election goes, having avoided making a major mistake, it usually doesn't matter. people vote the top of the ticket. gone are the days when a veep choice could at least be expected to deliver their home state.

eventually, the veep could, of course, become president, be it via the 25th amendment or an "heir apparent" subsequent run. but that really doesn't play influence votes. the top of the ticket WILL be president, the number 2 MAY become president.

so CHILL OUT with regarding the veep selection. it's the news of the day, but most people really don't think it matters.

the one thing i will say is that taking a senator for veep means losing that spot in the senate.we have razor thin control now, and while we're expected to pick up several, i'd hate to sacrifice one. even if we keep the seat with a replacement democrat, we'll still lose the experience and clout. i'd rather keep our senators where they are.

3. (When a reporter changed "piss" to "spit" for taste reasons, Garner called him a "pantywaist.")

5. You realize if Garner had stayed on, he would've been president, right?
Oh, the irony.

6. so you don't want the VP to be culled from the Senate?

Doubt it will, but I'd disagree with you about how much the VP pick means with regards to McCain - he is already ancient, his VP should be puit under a microscope.

8. as if cheney isn't a reflection of shrub?
to the extent that shrub wanted evil things done, i'm sure he's pleased with cheney. had he chosen a less (evilly) effective vice-president, i have no doubt shrub would have found someone else to do his evil bidding. there's nothing that i see cheney has done that isn't entirely consistent with shrub's aims.

alternatively, if you subscribe to the view that shrub is doofus and an easily manipulated empty moran, well, someone else would have wound up being the one to pull his strings. i don't see a shrub administration being much different even in an alternate universe where someone else was veep.

12. but Cheney's reign kind of puts the lie to the idea that the VP
is worth a "bucket of spit".

Personally, I think Al Gore's time in that office does also.

We've had 16 years now of Vice Presidents who were more than water boys for their Presidents.
