It has been more than 30 years, but Vietnam veteran Terry VanderMolen hasn't forgotten the nature of swift boat duty.
"You were a sitting duck. The bullets would pass right through," recalled VanderMolen, 57, who patrolled the coast of South Vietnam as a Navy seaman in 1967 and 1968.
Like many in this small swift boat fraternity, he doesn't consider himself especially political.
But VanderMolen, who lives about 25 miles south of Grand Rapids in Shelbyville, says he is fed up with charges about John Kerry's war record, attacks he takes as a slap in the face to all who served in Vietnam. He is the only West Michigan resident registered on an online swift boat crew directory and one of just several hundred swift boat veterans.
"I think it's all about politics," VanderMolen said. "I think Kerry is an honorable man. That man put his life on the line over there."

This I did not know:

The war of words has surfaced in the postings of one popular swift boat Web site, where some root for Kerry, others for the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
"I think it's despicable what you creeps are doing to John Kerry," one man wrote.
Another writes in to state that he served with a particular lieutenant and "NOT WITH JOHN KERRY."
