Just a guess: But Ted Kennedy will introduce Obama.
They say he won't be there, but there are now rumblings Kennedy may "visit" the convention.

I've thought this for a while, but this is the first news of Kennedy maybe making an appearance. My guess is that no one will really "know" he's there until someone, maybe Al Gore, introduces him.

Then he'll introduce Obama.

1. There is a tribute to the Kennedy family planned.
He'll be there.

2. Doubt it seriously.
And wouldn't recommend it. Love Teddy and I hope he's there but the big O should keep a bit of distance as EMK is still regarded as a far-left pinata at which the far right like to swing sticks.

Better these folks sleep thru the election, I'm thinkin'.

3. I don't agree.
Maybe ten years ago, but not now. Even conservatives understand Teddy is in his last few years of life and don't see how it would hurt at all.

8. There's ways of choreographing the event...
... i.e. Obama's acceptance speech....that will pay homage to the liberal icons of the past without tethering the nominee to an unpleasant image ( undeserved, sure; but it's there)that perisists in the collective imagination of the elusive "swing voter."

Even the non-insane right is sentimental about Teddy at the moment. You are correct. But introducing the nominee carries a lot of political symbolism. I don't think big O's braintrust wants the subliminal message conveyed to be " Kennedy passes the torch to Obama", which is exactly the message... accurate of not ( and it's NOT)... that will be absorbed by many.

We're too close now to cling to sentimental notions and ideological purity. EMK should speak to the convention but Obama should be introduced in some other fashion... and I believe he will be.

4. Disagree--we shouldn't run our convention according to RW assholes.
The convention is about Democrats celebrating the party, nominating Obama and putting forth the platform. It's all partisan, all the time. It's the once chance we have to hold up our long-time leaders and cheer for them publicly--Kennedy should be featured whenever possible. The Kennedy name still holds some weight in America, and still garners respect from Democrats. I don't care what Repubs think or say about him.

5. Bring on Uncle Ted!
The people who would get wrapped around the axle about Ted Kennedy being at the convention aren't the ones who are going to even consider voting Democratic. The average independent voter would listen to their rantings about Chappaquiddick (and that's really all they have isn't it?) and think to themselves - "Wow, what a bunch of douchebags - the man is dying and all they can do is talk about a car wreck he was in 40 years ago..." In my estimation, the Repugnican pundits' complete inability to restrain their knee-jerk hatred of Ted Kennedy would backfire, HARD.

6. I thought Al Gore was going to introduce him
Maybe I incorrectly inferred that when I heard he was speaking on Thursday.

7. They have yet to mention who will introduce Obama.
It very well could be Gore, but I would think they'd have more than two speakers there.
