Wow I just saw my first wide shot of the convention floor -
There are a LOT of people there. By the sound of the applause through the MSNBC.com feed it sounded like there were about 30 unenthusiastic souls.

1. Oh, yeah, they have to dampen the crowd noise or you'd never hear a word the speakers said.
You know that crowd is rockin', though. :woohoo:

3. Exactly
Not everything is malicious intent on the part of the networks. :)

2. They may not have mics stationed throughout the convention hall
Rather they're tapped directly into the soundboard for the podium mic. Kinda like a concert recording...

8. normally they'd mix the sound
Edited on Mon Aug-25-08 06:11 PM by CitizenPatriot
but this is live and it's a lot easier to just mic the people and try to keep the sound of the crowd low. I am usually paranoid about the media, but I think this is a symptom of not spending the money and time to mix the sound.

I'm not a sound engineer, but I have several friends who are -- so I'll ask them when I can!

edit for first advisory: yes, they could have mixed this live and so maybe they are dimming sound on purpose. this on the advice of a video/audio technical for live events. My opinion on this is that they're focused on what people are saying. the noise must be just crazy! Let's see what they do with crowd shots.

9. I think most the crowd comes when the main speakers
start...most are out at different break out meetings and parties.
