With gas prices trickling down, do you think the drilling issue is running out of steam?
This poll from Nancy Boyda's (D) conservative district in Kansas caught my attention:

cut

The poll posed the question "If two candidates were running for Congress, and one says that offshore drilling is the best way to solve America's energy problems ... and the other says that America needs to identify and promote alternative sources of energy ... which candidate would you vote for?" and 56% of the people chose the candidate who wanted to identify and promote alternative resources. Once again, Kansas Republicans are on the wrong side of an issue.

I can't help but think that people only call for drilling when they feel desperate, and prices keep going up and up. But if prices trickle down, then some of the steam is lost out of this issue.

1. Drill now was just a campaign ploy by McCain.
Most people now know that drilling now will not effect the price of gas today.

2. I believe that
there will be insufficient time between the high prices and the election in November for people to forget. Blocking drilling for whatever reasons is a losing position for the Democratic party.

I also believe that Obama made a major mistake in not choosing Hillary as his Vice President.

For what it's worth, those are MHO.

6. MHO;
You've got a long way to go until your wit even approaches your avatar.

I know you're joking, you have to be, but it didn't work.

Again, MHO.

3. Good point. I think after 2004 voters are savvy about gas price manipulation
and that last big hike was indelibly linked to Big Oil manipulation.

If prices continue to drop or drop drastically pre-November, I don't think it will help the RRRs at all. Voters are too smart for that now.

4. Support for all solutions always runs out of steam when fuel prices fall
Jimmy Carter was right.

7. Gas is still over 3 dollars...hopefully we don't get apathetic that quickly.

8. I think you are making a mistake in assuming that gas prices will continue to fall
One of a number of things could easily cause gas prices to go back up. If that happens than the drilling issue does not go away.

If the current trend continues then, it is possible the issue could lose steam, but prices would have to fall back to around $3 a gallon, and I don't see that happening in two months.

10. Small drop, BIG spike, small drop, BIG spike ...
That's been the pattern and it will continue.

This is a momentary lull. The next hurricane or pipeline catastrophe will send it rocketing up again.

It's encouraging that at least SOME people get it, i.e. "56% of the people chose the candidate who wanted to identify and promote alternative resources." Thanks for posting.
