McCaskill: McCain's Emphasis on POW is Demeaning to this Campaign
She strongly expressed her gratitude for his service and the terrible moments that he suffered in the Vietnam War, but she wonders what happened to McCain who in his whole career in the Senate would shy away from taking advantage of his former POW status. That being said, she expressed her desire that McCain focuses on what he can do to help the middle class and the people that are economically disadvantaged under the current Administration. She said that it truly would be demeaning to the Presidential Campaign if McCain continues to use the POW status as a crutch in his quest for the White House.

She also said that tonight will be a great night for Hillary Clinton and that the MSM would be very disappointed because Hillary will do a great job to unite the Party.

My respect and admiration for Claire McCaskill, the Energizer bunny for Obama

1. Mike Murphy is such an asshole.
He just said that McCaskill was trying to turn McCain's being a "war hero into a bad thing".

I know.
Maureen Dowd sucks, but I'm glad she wrote about this. Nora O'Donnel brought it up last night too, and ANOTHER side effect is that in addition to examining the POW card, it points out that McCain cheated on his first wife.

2. YES!!! This is the first surrogate I've seen say it.
It took awhile for it to get to the progressive media, then the more mainstream media, now it's great to have a surrogate and a Senator say it!

3. Chuck Todd is a fucking weak ass for not challenging the repukes on this one
He uses the POW thing to deflect EVERYTHING, especially his shitty policies. Mike Murphy and the other repuke are saying that this treads on "dangerous territory" for the Democrats, and Chuck Todd just moved on and did not challenge him on his claim that this somehow degrades McCain's experience.

5. McCain's abuse of his POW status demeans and diminishes all POWs, imo, and that is....
appalling. He is making the horrors suffered by POWs into a cliche for political expediency. It is sickening and I have no doubt the POWs are sickened by this as well.

14. Here is a very clear statement from Lt. General Robert G. Gard Jr. ...
McCain's POW Defense: Devaluing Our Service and His Own

The McCain campaign has spent weeks trying to portray Obama as out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Americans. Today, an interviewer at Politico.com asked McCain how many homes he and his wife owned, to which he responded that he was not sure but would get someone from his staff to answer.

Contrary to what many will tell you, this does not make McCain out of touch with ordinary Americans, as many families today are in trouble with their banks and trying to figure out how many homes they have - zero or one.

"This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years -- in prison."
We obviously honor and respect McCain's service and the five-and-a-half years of horror that he went through at the hands of the North Vietnamese; but it's not an excuse for everything. He has already used it to explain away his infidelities in his first marriage. He's used it to defend his healthcare plan. He just the other day used it to deflect accusations of having skirted the rules of the Saddleback forum.

snip

So today, we ask not as Veterans for Obama, but as Veterans of America that Sen. McCain respect the service of his fellow POWs and combat veterans, and stop cheapening their service by hiding behind his own.

10. I Stopped respecting McCaskill When She Voted For FISA
Twice. And Cleaver too. And yes, I have a problem with Obama voting for it also. Still better than McCain, for sure. I'm not a single issue thinker but for me civil liberties are the foundation on which everything else rests.

I'll continue to write all the congress critters that voted for this crap and work against my rep's re-election for one that actually defends the Constitution.

11. Hero by Chance
Maybe being a former POW is McCain's best excuse for each of
the bad choices he had made in his life. He did's set out to
be a POW Hero, that happened by chance. But all of his
unheroiuc behavior has been by choice...turning his back on
his disabled first wife and his first three kids, the Keating
5, even not being in the "cone of silence" for the
faith forum. McCain is a Hero by Chance and Deceptive by
Choice.

13. Totally agree with you. I cannot stand him. I was criticized because I said that Bush is better
than McPOW...but if Bush is bad, McCain is much worse because Bush may be an idiot and a moron, etc. but he does not have a black empty soul like McShame.
