TV ratings for the Big Three networks' DNC coverage
http://www.tvweek.com/news/2008/08/nbc_wins_metered_markets_on_dn.php

NBC's coverage of the Democratic National Convention's first day trumped the other broadcast networks' coverage Monday night in metered household ratings, the most preliminary numbers available.

The Big Three networks covered the DNC for an hour in prime time, beginning at 10 p.m. EDT.

The convention coverage aired live, meaning Michelle Obama's speech, the evening's main event, aired in the 7 p.m hour in some markets.

NBC's coverage of the DNC brought in a 3.8 rating/6 share in metered households, which represent 56 national markets.

Second-place ABC earned a 2.9/5 for its coverage and CBS took third place with a 2.4/4.

Does anyone know how this compares with past conventions? And what the cable news and C-SPAN audience might have added to this?

1. I bet CSPAN is pulling down their best ratings ever.
People are sick of those jabbering monkeys telling us what to think about speeches than actually listening to the speeches themselves.

2. ratings for conventions have been dropping in recent years
For example, in 2004, the Democratic Convention had a collective rating from ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN/MSNBC/FOX of 14.3. That was down from 15.3 in 2000, 17.2 in 1996 and 22 in 1992.

In the decades preceding the 90s, collective ratings were typically in the 20s.

Don't know if C-SPAN's audience is "metered."

4. Hmm, I wonder how many watched it streaming online?
I don't have cable and was just streaming it online, like a few other people I know. I did turn it on PBS during Michelle's speech though (which made this grown man eyes get watery).

5. The networks did a horrible job covering the convention last night.
I was switching around at the 10 o'clock hour to the big 3 networks. All three spent the first half hour talking their asses off and not showing anything until Michelle came on.

NBC didn't even show the Michelle video. Brokaw was running his mouth.
