All of this talk about a Hurricane and McCain should be a major concern (politically and otherwise)

One, we're better than all the talk saying "well, I guess the fundies prayers were answered". People can and will die. People will lose their homes, their property, and their possessions. The cost will be staggering, as they are in natural disaster. Sure, the Fundies are pathetic with their crazy little "rain dance" to the magical sky wizard, but this storm is far more than a rain storm. Lets show some class and sensitivity here.

Two, there's a lot of talk about how a hurricane during the GOP convention would somehow hurt McCain. I don't subscribe to this theory. Think about it - another hurricane, on the Gulf Coast would present a golden opportunity to put on a dog and pony show about how the government and the GOP can get it right. While we all know that the people matter nothing to McCain and the GOP unless they donate tons of money to their pet causes and keep them in power, they would relish the opportunity to "do it right" when the spotlights on them. The media narrative would be " The government gets it right and saves/rescues thousands; Far Cry From Katrina; McCain spearheads effort to save millions from disastrous hurricane".

Don't get me wrong, I want our government to do all they can in the event a hurricane hits our coasts. I just find all of this talk about it somehow hurting McCain to be losing sight on the bigger picture. Let's just hope this thing blows itself out before it gets to land and its impact is negligible. I don't want to see people hurt and I don't want to see the GOP ham it up when we all know how they really react in times of trouble (see Katrina).

1. History Repeats Itself: McCain & Bush party together when hurricanes hit the Gulf.
John McCain & George Bush partied while Americans were drowning during Katrina.

John McCain & George Bush are partying yet again as Gustav hits the Gulf.

It's the Grand Old Party.

2. I'm hoping nobody gets hurt.... but that it serves as a REMINDER about Katrina....

Let's hope it fizzles out, or does minimal damage.

But the juxtaposition of hurricane coverage and Republicans partying would reinforce what happened during the aftermath of Katrina.

It's not like we have the power to control the hurricane anyway. It's going to do what it is going to do.

The fundies believe that prayer can help.

personally, I think prayer is tantamount to talking to oneself.

4. My concern is that McCain wouldn't be partying - they'd make it into PhotoOP
I can hear it now, "John McCain left the convention today, one day before he was to accept his parties nomination, in order to spearhead the evacuations of many people from the Gulf Coast region" or "John McCain, leaves convention in order to regale the Hurricane with POW stories in hopes it might kill itself."

Think about how they operate. They would turn this into the biggest false photo opportunity in history.

5. Haha, thanks for that!
We'll see how things turn out, here's to hoping this thing just tuckers out.

6. Drill here! Drill now!
This is precisely what came to my mind first. Mother nature has a way of showing us our vulnerable spots, and this is one of them. A hurricane in the gulf underscores the risks of off-shore drilling and undermines McCain's message on drilling.

Unlike the OP, I have a feeling the GOP is concerned most about getting knocked out of the news cycle during their convention. Beyond that, you don't hear the right wingers bring up Katrina voluntarily. Ever. All things being equal, they hope it blows out because it is a potential problem for them on two fronts.

Also, there's no evidence this storm will be as severe as Katrina was...at least not yet anyway.

7. Lets hope you are right!
I see your point and that does give me some positivity to think about on the political front. It's very true- its a weakness but you can be sure they'll try to cut into it somehow. Even if it is having Gramps out on the beachfront telling his POW stories on the Weather Channel.
