Because of his perceived status on McCain’s veep short list, Romney has drawn sharp fire from Democrats here. Meeting with swing-state reporters Monday, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe called Romney a “job-killing machine” during his business career.

Romney told reporters Tuesday that his investment firm had put money into more than 100 different businesses, and “in some we were successful, in some we failed. In every case I can remember it was our goal to grow (them)” and said he was happy to have people look at his record.

The Plouffe comment wasn’t the only shot aimed at Romney. At a breakfast Tuesday, a reporter told Senate Democrat Debbie Stabenow of Michigan that “we have Mitt Romney for lunch,” referring to Romney’s meeting later that day with journalists.

“We intend to have Mitt Romney for lunch as well,” said Stabenow. .
