The architecture is not the issue.

It is entirely gratuitous and silly to build a Greek colonade inside a football stadium. When Obama spoke in Berlin, he selected a historical venue, an authentic, symbolic monument... he didn't have to BUILD a faux monument for a backdrop or create an artifice to give the moment more import.

Obama moved his speech to a football stadium to "bring it to the people" and accomodate thousands more. A grandiose backdrop does not belong in a football stadium. The Greek colonade is an entirely gratuitous artiface. Obama needs a top-notch sound system, a platform, a jumbo-tron or 2, and a giant campaign logo behind the podium. That's IT.

Obama is kicking himself (and us) in the ass here... more fodder for low-brow, stupid GOP mockery, ads, all tapping into familiar GOP themes of Obama as messianic, etc. We need this like a f*cking hole in the head. If you don't think that shit like this will get pumped and humped dry by the GOP, ask President Kerry. Sludge has it up top... if you think that this won't be a distraction from what should be a historic moment for us, you are kidding yourself.

There is ample work for set-designers and construction workers to create the stage platform, back-drops, and audio-visual systems required to pull this off. As far as the rubber Acropolis, it's entirely gratuitous.

FYI, my friend and her husband (gallery owner) are in Denver now; some of their artists have work at the Pepsi Center-- we're from Hoboken, NJ. So much for using Denver locals.

It's the architecture that's being talked about and laughing and poking fun at them for it is exactly the right reaction. There isn't ANYTHING wrong with backdrop, and the symbolism is apparent to many ... why can't you just let them enjoy it?
