Would old school GOP men or Evangelical Men vote for |
|
a female on the GOP ticket?
I loved my grandpa. He was a WASP, veteran of WW2, humble man. RIP grandpa. He was a dyed in the wool Republican. But I remember he told me a few years back that he doesn't think that women should have a leaderhsip role in Federal government. He wasn't a sexist but just old school. My grandmother worked as a nruse so he wasn't against women working. But the government was a place for old white men to make the important decisions.
He wouldn't vote for Obama for sure but I doubt he would have voted for a McCain/Female ticket.

1. He wasn't sexist, just old school? No offense, but "old school" was sexism. |
|
Not knocking your grampa, that was a generational thing (my Grampa's were sexist too), but let's call it what it is.

5. True--old school is a nice way to say racist and sexist. That's why Obama |
|
does so poorly among the elderly.

9. my guess is that you haven't read much about racism, here or elsewhere. Racism is not the use of a |
|
single word. It's the use of exclusion, suppression, oppression and the enabling (your father) of it.
Much like how the modern white Christian Right excuses themselves from the murder, torture and other misery they have enabled, by saying, I just wanted to protect my right to say "Christmas".

10. The definition of racism is |
|
a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. Merriam-Webster.
My grandfather worked in the factories with dozens of black men. He went to church with dozens of black men. He wasn't a racist. But he DID have problem with women in decision making positions which as far as I can tell (and what my father told me) was most likely biblical.
There's a big difference between a racist and a sexist. Both are not right but are different meanings.

I guess I look at that generation (and many before that) as simply just more ignorant of tolerance. If you are that sexist this day in age you must work pretty hard to be a sexist and a fool. Back then it was simply the way it was. I'm not trying to make excuses. I used to have a very tough time discussing these isuues because I wanted to haul off and call him a moron sometimes.
However, something that is ingrained is tough to get out. Thank God my folks were products of the '60s and moved away from that type of mindset.

These people have proven time and time again that they don't stand for anything. For them it's all about the (R).

Although I am an Indians fan any team that can beat the hell out of the Sox and Yanks is OK with me. Go Rays!:hi:

11. Yeah we're loving it down here. |
|
The Rays have always been plagued by the New York and Boston fan transplants down here taking over the stadium when the Yanks and Sox come to town. It's so nice to see them in the minority nowadays.

8. My old school GOP step-dad says he's voting for Obama. |
|
This is a guy who hasn't voted for a DEM since JFK, served 2 1/2 tours in Viet Nam, and rails against "brainless liberals".
But even he acknowledges something is wrong with the way things are going.
And he wouldn't have voted for Hillary under ANY circumstances (which may go part way to answering your question).

12. I have been flipping old school GOPers |
|
both men and women to Obama over the past few months. So I think there is a lot more potential for them to be Obama voters. I am talking Goldwater types. I think it will be surprising how some of them will vote.

14. My Dad is very old school... |
|
He was always racist and sexist as a younger man. He has always voted republican and said over the years that liberals were too soft. He is not religious and socially moderate, but the fear/war mongering propaganda always worked on him like a charm, especially the cold war stuff.
Recently he has seen the light. He sees that they have lied to us about Iraq and is furious about the damage they have done to the economy. He does not buy into the recent BS about Russia and is rethinking the past 50 years with this new mindset. Dad was disappointed in Nixon, but Bushco has changed the game completely. He really fears what they will do next if McCain gets in.
I think Bush has gone too far and blown their cover with moderate republicans. Republican voters are contrasting the Clinton and Bush years and many will see the difference and undeniable superiority of the 1990's. Even though the polls are not showing this, I think repubs will be left this election only with the hardcore wingnut base.
I am proud to say that Dad is voting for Obama. :-)
