With more than two years of meticulous planning under their belts, organizers of the Republican National Convention are warily watching Tropical Storm Gustav to see if it turns into a hurricane and slams into the Gulf Coast.

As the storm gained momentum Thursday off the coast of Jamaica, it was headed on a trajectory toward New Orleans, which was hit three years ago today by Hurricane Katrina. If it strikes the Gulf Coast on Monday, that would coincide with the first day of the GOP convention at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

"We're monitoring it," said convention spokeswoman Melissa Subbotin. "There's absolutely no plan to postpone ."

1. I am not getting the problem
It could have rained in Mpls anyway.
besides they're dropping like flies:
'Former governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., Maryland's most prominent Republican, has decided to skip his party's national convention in St. Paul, Minn., next week, citing a busy schedule of things to do with his law firm and his son's football team.

"The schedule's just crazy right now, and I have no formal role to play," Ehrlich said in an interview yesterday'

4. Bush is supposed to appear Monday at the convention
He might decide this time to appear more concerned and cancel his appearance.

5. That priest who prayed for rain during the DNC party got instead a hurricane during the RNC party...

McCain's luck sure is consistent. First he gets hurricaned away from a speach at an oil platform. Now, a republican priest's prayer has backfired. The media will get destracted during the RNC party, and people will be reminded of Katrina.

I hope the hurricane turns away and spares us, even if it does mean clear weather for the RNC party.

I guess I wouldn't make a good priest.
