Converting the inconvertible?
I know 'inconvertible' usually pertains to money/coin. I'm usin' it anyway.

I've been having a(n often heated) debate with a friend of mine. He's quite affluent, being a Neuroradiologist. He swears that an Obama presidency will force him to pay exorbitant taxes. We've gone round and round about the issue.

So I emailed him a link to ihavenobias' brilliant OP, then kinda held my breath. I mean, some of our debates have been *very* ... erm ... lively.

Here's his (brief) response:

Hey Doll!

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I won't feel so bad if Obama wins.

Le Doc

Okay okay, so he's still not converted. But I'm tellin' you, it's a FAR CRY from his previous responses in our ongoing debate.

Undaunted, I wrote back:

What's up Doc?

It means a lot to me that you even took the time to visit the link, and I hope you took further time to visit the afforded imbedded links.

Now, don't get mad, 'cause I'm not pointing any fingers ... honest.

But even for people who're in the $227,000-$603,000 bracket, is an extra dollar per month so bad, considering how much good it will do for our country as a whole? It'll help working class families; it'll go toward offering health care to Americans who have none (which should mean something to you, being a doctor and all); it'll go toward schools, offering our children a better education, thereby making us a stronger nation in the long run; it'll help rebuild infrastructure; it'll go toward renewable energy, thereby making the world our children, and our children's children, inherit a better place to live ... at the same time creating hundreds of thousands (if not more) new 'green' jobs that cannot be outsourced; and it will help rebuild our ailing (at best) economy. I just don't see how someone could vote against that.

Okay. There. I won't press the issue further.

For now. ;D

We'll see what he says to that. I'm not giving up. If I can't convert him, I may just have to wish him the best and say farewell. Shame. Outside of our political differences, he's a good guy. But after the attrocities of the last eight years ... I just can't stomach a Republican. Not even one who's been a good friend.

1. I just want to tell you that I sincerely admire your efforts, you're doing a wonderful thing!
Even just getting him to point of "won't feel so bad" is a MAJOR coup. Because for certain he has friends among his income class, and maybe the next time one of them starts in about the horrors of an Obama presidency, he might peep up and say, "Well, actually, it's not THAT bad..."

Thank you for a cool anecdote. "Each one, teach one." :yourock:

2. Some Are Just A Lost Cause
Political rule 10-35-10-35-10

10% of Americans are liberals who will never waver on any issue.
35% are liberals that are empathetic to conservative views but are truly liberal.
10% are legitimately independent.
35% are conservatives who are empathetic to liberal views, but are truly conservative.
10% are conservatives will never waver on any issue.

It's our current political climate. I was just reading up on some past elections and it blows my mind how unified the country used to be! Mind you, I'm 26 years old and have known nothing except Bush 1, Clinton and Bush 2.

3. Welcome to the DU th13182!
:hi: I've been around about twice as long as you have been and I am sad to see this really. Bush #1 and then Bush #2; Clinton in between is all you've yet to see. A drastic change is about to occur I firmly believe at long last.

Things are changing now finally thank god and I've been waiting too, believe me on that one.

I am hoping for the best and so should you!

Again, welcome to the Democratic Underground.
