Why is Andrea Mitchell talking as if Palin is the first woman ever to be nominated for VP?
Some how I have this very clear memory of someone named Geraldine Ferraro being the VP nominee way back in 1984....when the repukes would never even have considered such a thing!!!

Mondale selected Geraldine Ferraro to be his Vice Presidential candidate on July 12, 1984.<8> Mondale made his decision after interviewing several candidates, including Colorado Sen. Gary Hart, San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros, San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein<9>, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, Philadelphia Mayor Wilson Goode, Kentucky Governor Martha Layne Collins, and Senator Lloyd Bentsen. In her acceptance speech upon being chosen as Mondale's running mate, Ferraro said, "The daughter of an immigrant from Italy has been chosen to run for vice president in the new land my father came to love."

The choice of Ferraro was viewed as a gamble, and pundits were uncertain whether the choice would result in a net gain or loss of votes<10> for the Mondale campaign. However Ferraro noted that prior to choosing a running mate, Mondale was 16 points behind Reagan; after her selection, polling was "dead even."<11>

As a Catholic, Ferraro came under fire from some members of the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church for being pro-choice on abortion.<12>

There was only one Vice Presidential debate between Congresswoman Ferraro and Vice President Bush, which was proclaimed mostly neutral by the press. Ferraro criticized Reagan's actions of refusing to support the Voting Rights Act. Her experience was questioned at the debate and she was asked how her three terms in Congress stacked up with Bush's experience. She strongly defended her position on abortion, which earned her applause and a respectful reply from her opponent, Vice President Bush.<13><13>

After the debate, Barbara Bush was asked what she thought of Ferraro; she responded, "I can’t say it, but it rhymes with rich."<14> Later that evening, Mrs. Bush called Ferraro to apologize. Ferraro now explains Bush's words as having been said in defense of her own husband; Mrs. Bush had said this after an open microphone had caught George H.W. Bush bragging that he had "kicked a little ass" following the debate.<15>

2. And Andrea seems to think that ALL of
Hillary's voters are going to run to McCain because he picked this woman. This pick makes me think that McCain just looked around the room to see who had a vagina and saw Sarah. I personally can't wait for the debates, I mean, what the hell is her experience?

5. But she's right...
ALL women can't help but vote for any woman who's running.

Just as ALL blacks can't help but vote for any black person who's running.

Just as ALL latinos can't help but vote for any latino who's running.

Damn minorities, voting en masse for a member of their group. You don't see that with white Christian males, you know. :sarcasm:

24. facts, schmacts...
We're talking as Republicans here: so let's just redefine the problem away. Women are a minority, because, um, we're talking about adult females. Yeah, that's the ticket.

"Voila! Problem solved."

12. I had to shut her off
She and her punditry were acting as if this was a whole new ballgame. Excuse me, but people vote for the top of the ticket. Palin represents more of the same policies except with a prettier face.

17. The GOP will try to rewrite history and ignore Ferraro until someone busts their chops
Then they lose the "history making" decription of their ticket. Then it just becomes mind boggling...

22. new Obama ad idea...
"The Republican definition of 'progress': treading trails trodden by Democrats 20 years ago! Another 25 and one of them might actually have a chance in a GOP primary!" (h/t Dave Matthews ;-) )

I must admit, Palin was impressive at least as far as the technicalities of the speechifying went, though that only underlined how abysmal McCain is at it. The content, though, was utter bullshit. For instance, invoking the women's suffrage movement--you know that group of submissive, devoutly religious, and husband-obedient women who asked ever-so politely to please have the right to vote to keep them subservient to their husbands.
