I keep seeing Palin described as a "hail mary" pick, which I think makes McCain Garo Yepremian

In Super Bowl VII, the Miami Dolphins lined up to kick a field goal up 14-0 against Washington with only about two minutes left in the game. The kick was blocked and wound up in the hands of kicker Garo Yepremian, a soccer player from Cypress who had pretty much no experience playing or watching American football until he signed with the Detroit Lions in the 60s. Rather than falling on the ball, Garo picked it up and made an ill-advised attempt to launch a desperation pass. The ball slipped out of his hands, wobbled straight up into the air, and landed in Mike Bass's hands. The Washington DB ran it all the way in for a touchdown. Yepremian was a good kicker, but that pass secured his place in history, becoming one of the most famous bloopers in NFL history.

Alas, I can't find the video on youtube (copyright, I assume), but I can't help but think of Garo Yepremian when I see this pick described as a "hail mary."

Of course, there are substantial differences--the Dolphins were ahead, for example, and went on to win the game, whereas McCain is already behind and this will only make things worse for him. But that aside, like Yepremian's, McCain's pick guarantees he'll live on in infamy.
