I was out of town last night and couldn't post this at the time, but I got a call after the |
|
convention from a friend who had ripped on Obama over and over who said he watched the speech and was now seriously considering voting for Obama! If Obama is getting through to guys like this then Obama is THE MAN!
Let me give you some background on this fellow. He is someone who probably doesn't vote but listens to right wing radio to pass the time with his job but doesn't really know much about politics at all. He is much like Kevin Costner's character in the movie "Swing Vote". He has a heart of gold, grew up in Kansas and has Republican roots. Just two days ago he told me he didn't like Joe Biden because of his remark about his seven houses. He said "Just because he was successful ...." blah, blah, blah! He was clearly listening to Rush on that. I pointed out to him that Biden was just pointing out that he was out of touch with most Americans like himself because he doesn't have to worry about things. He paused and had nothing to say. Anyway, that was several days ago and last night after the convention he literally calls me up and tells me how impressed he was with Obama and how he said all the right things. He also said he reminded him of John Kennedy. Not to be a downer but he was also worried about Obama and his little girls when he was out on the stage last night.
Anyway, if this fellow was moved by Obama then tens of millions of swing voters were as well. My task will be getting him out to vote even if I have to help him get an absentee ballot. Last night was a good opportunity to explain to him that Democrats were looking out for guys like him. That it was in his best interest financially to vote Democrat. He was clearly and example of the "Whats the Matter with Kansas" type. Shows that these fellows can be courted and vote Dem if we give them our sales pitch. Howard Dean deserves credit for understanding this.
So, Obama has opened the door for a few very hardcore Republican types and it's up to us to close the deal and get them to the polls! This was clearly a reason for me to be optimistic! Great job last night Obama!

Good for you, for giving him something to really think about...
And good for him, for actually thinking instead of just reacting!

3. He said he started out listening and expecting to not like Obama |
|
then as he listened he was drawn in. That is a really good sign.

5. My up-until-this-year republican aunt |

in ultra conservative southern Florida called me Thursday morning - a weekday when we have always talked only on weekends. She felt she couldn't wait to tell me how much she loves Biden, how much she is pitching Obama/Biden to everyone who will listen to her.
I told her the Russian/Georgia conflict was dangerously tilting the race toward McCain. Her response was that she would just have to work harder talking to everyone she met. She even asked me if I knew that McCain sent Cindy over to speak with the Georgians. She was very angry about that.
So, yes, those voters we thought were unreachable really ARE paying attention. I hope this has the results I was expecting in 2000 and 2004. I really do.

...and they are Independent/undecideds! That speech did a LOT to convince them.
EDIT: and bro-in-law likes Biden.

9. I really think more people can identify with Obama's experience than with |
|
McCain's and hopefully that will be a big plus.
