Choice of Palin is a GOP move to reduce Government spending.
As it is the Democratic Party that has championed "equal pay for equal work" against the resistence of the right, perhaps McCain is trying to save the government some cash by choosing Palin.

The position pays $208,000 but in line with GOP tradition, McCain will only pay Palin $146,000.

That's a saving of $52,000 for you and me.

I guess it may not be quite "equal work" as the Democratic Party and the US Constitution believe that the VP is a member of the Executive Branch but Cheney has decided that GOP VP's are a new, fourth branch.
