6. Me too
Even though I have very few posts, I've been registered at DU for about four years now, and I don't think I've ever been so sad in my life. I appreciate the post that objectively look at how Palin's unqualified based on how she's handled issues while she's been in office. But the stuff about her possibly faking her pregnancy, calling her a bimbo, a whore...I think I've wandered into Freeperville. Now, I agree completely that she was a desperation token woman pick by McCain, but I refuse to be distracted by her, and wish that people would take a deep breath and remember who the real enemy is..McCain and the machine behind him whose agenda Palin will have no influence on changing.

25. "No male gets a pass from the men..." That's exactly right.
Men are really good about that.

We gleefully ridicule, brutalize, slander, use hate speach towards, vilify, castrate, mock, name-call, poke, smear, tease, intellectually micturate upon each other with wild abandon.

Everyone gets equal treatment. None are immune. Stand out in any real way and you are screwn.

We start honing our mad skeels very early in life.

NOTHING in this world is meaner than an 8 year old boy.

Oh, wait:

Except maybe a 12 year old girl.

19. The GOP wants us divided!
Wasn't the Hillary v. Obama theme they kept running proof of that? I believe they think that by putting up a woman (any woman), they shut down the debate. Palin doesn't deserve special treatment because she's a woman anymore than Obama deserves special treatment because of his race.

Frankly, if she's going to put herself out there as an example of motherhood & virtue, then she's opening up some doors to discuss her personal choices. Did I read that she's a member of Feminists for Life? Ick! I just had to right a letter to the editor this week because of that groups lies! They were contending that early suffragists were anti-abortion & the Dem platform should reflect those beliefs. They're SO manipulative with the facts!

This whole business of "I am running on a platform of X" or "I answer questions about policy by referencing my a) family b) POW status etc" but don't you dare question me too much about it, is stupid. POW is on the table. Mommy status is on the table. Running on integrity, but maybe you bitch slapped a trooper as payback for a personal grudge? On the table. Maybe you faked a pregnancy to cover up your daughter's mistake, while running as the honest candidate? On the table.

This is politics, this is getting into someone's face and soul to see if they can handle it or just plain make sense before they strut out and think they can be worthy of representing me on a world stage. And generally to a bunch of people who are even tougher audiences than the american public. I am looking for a strong leader, or in the case, someone who is expecting to understudy the strong leader. The fact that Palin is a womn is completely f'g irrelevant to this older woman - she is a candidate. She is apparently way light on qualifications. I never want to wake up one morning, turn on the tube, and see that due to McCain's untimely passing in the night, I have Palin as president. I don't think I've ever seen something so scary and so evident of bad judgment by McCain in my life. Elderly cancer survivor, who PROMISED he would pick someone "ready from day one" in case the worst happened to him. And we get this Palin? I keep thinking I am living an episode of SNL, but it is real. This two bit player from rural AK could be holding the nuclear football by this time next year; trying to find a diplomatic solution when a bunch of tinpot dictators decide to bitch slap us a bit, and play rougher with her than americans would (because we told to play nice with this candidate, and quite being such meanies).

I don't give a holy crap who thinks this is touch football. This is a full body extreme contact sport, and I have no desire to see people give anyone a pass because they cry and say it is too rough, or imply that they can't take it.

And while I am at it - "uncalled for" "attacks"? By "women"? How stupid a statement was that? Thanks, but no thanks, for the offer to vet my opinions to see if they met your standards. lolololol....not all women are as dumb as a box of rocks. Palin must be making some guys feel hopeful.

Do you know anything about Midlodemocrat? Well let me school you on a thing or two - this woman is a democrat, a feminist, a mother and an amazing person. And I happen to agree with everything that she has posted here. I also know that she has been damn excited about the Obama nomination and is pleased with Joe Biden too (well perhaps she didn't want her ass kicked by her friends from Delaware - like me).

Midlodemocrat never has been or can be called a PUMA. And Midlo, just like Hillary, would not support a McCain/Hillary ticket.

You should hang your head in shame for even thinking that!

I'm attacking the attacks, and I say this in my title. If it makes everyone feel better, then put "men" in the place of "women".

Why can't the same line of attack used on McSame be used on Palin?

There was so much discussion on what and what not to attack McSame over.

I see none of this caution with Palin.

Now go back to attacking me for not making this a gender issue. I could have written Hillary's supporters instead of women. I suppose that wouldn't mean women. Besides, I used the profiles to figure out who the posters were. And it's your attacks on me that makes me wonder what side your on, and a big reason for this post.

that John McCain or anyone else would think that body parts could influence my vote.

So pro-choice, pro-equal rights women, who have fought for universal health care and worked to clean up the environment and espouse pro-Earth issues should be excited about someone who is still living in the dark ages on these issues -- because such person has a vagina? This woman is for teaching creationism! She's far-right in her religious beliefs, and does not believe in a division between church and state. Yes, I'm outraged by this pick. It's cynical. I thought it was me. At thread's start, it was uncalled for attacks by "woman", then he accuses repliers of making this a gender issue (huh?) when the subject line of his OP made it a gender issue, then it turns out "woman" really means Hillary supporters, though why that group would be more predisposed to stir up shit against Palin than any other group on DU escapes my understanding. WHAT THE FUCK IS HE TALKING ABOUT! Where is the logic behind any of this?

37. Okay, re-reading this thread
I guess I read the title a little differently from other posters. I thought the OP was indicating that THEY (the OP) was a woman, and was offended AS a woman, but other posters seem to feel that she's talking about attacks from other women, period, and are reacting to the thought that women posters only were being unfair. I guess the OP using woman vs. women is what threw me off. That makes me understand the reactions on this thread a lot better, thank goodness. I do feel that Palin's gotten some uncalled for attacks, but it had nothing to do with the sex of who was posting it.

41. You know what I'm sick of?
Women who want an equal playing field but somehow do not think insults /attacks (included those rooted in sex based terms) are off the table simply because they are women.

For women to really compete they CANNOT whine about being called a bitch etc. It only confirms to those who think women are not as TOUGH as men when the issue becomes about insults.

What I am sick of is the fact she is an attractive woman that she automatically gets a nod for VP - THAT IS WHAT IS SICKENING TO ME.

If women are to truly be equal they need to put the brass balls on so to speak and deal with this crap. We are not immune simply because of our sex.

they need to stop tearing each other down and allowing others to do the same based on gender. Attack their views, their opinions and their actions not their fucking gender. It would be like attacking blacks based on their color. My brass balls are just fine.

110. you're expecting different treatment because of her gender
THAT'S the problem.

I'm not saying it's right or it's not happening. What I am saying is making it a freaking issue is hurting the overall cause. Ignore it and stick to the issues.

This is exactly what keeps women down - people perceive them as not having the emotional strength to deal with crap like this. When insults are repeatedly brought up, it works big time with lots of men and some women.

Since we all can see the profile, I knew through this way they were woman. I didn't have to, but they were all woman posters. Instead of a broad brush I narrowed it down.

How about using the same line of attack on Palin as used on McSame?

Where you would question whether or not an attack would backfire.

There was all kinds of respect toward Obama about anything backfiring that would harm Obama.

What happened?

Why no caution?

What am I missing here?

You are in a twilight zone. Specificity, please. Since when has DU exercised caution in attacking McCain? Cite the threads, please. Re BHO, this is a Democratic message board and he is the Dem nominee. Call 60 Minutes! Obama is an object of respect on DU! And still, there were plenty of BHO bashing threads during the primaries. So what are you saying? That we should show a greater deference towards Palin, a foreign policy illiterate right wing whackjob who could be a heartbeat away from the Presidency, than we have shown towards McCain, BHO or Hillary? As I said, you're in the twilight zone.

95. Ah yes, but you decided to address your criticism to the women instead
Sounds pretty chauvinistic to me. First off, I'm a male and if you were to tell me to shut up, I'd tell you to take a swing from my left nad. Second, how Obama handles his campaign is his business -- and how I express my support of him is mine. I intend to talk as often as possible with each of my many dear Republican friends and try to convince them why we CANNOT afford to place these neo-con freaks back in positions of power for another four years.
Oh yeah, and since I'm one of the rarest of rarities around here, a pro-life liberal, I fully intend to bash Palin as a bad mother. If the official story is true, she knew she was going to give birth to a Down Syndrome baby, went ahead (which I applaud) and now -- what? -- has chosen to drag a four-month-old infant through a 50-state presidential campaign? Even though a Down baby needs constant care and attention, is more prone to illness and infection, is learning-challenged and, as do all babies, needs most to bond with his mother. The whole affair is disgusting and anything but "pro-life."
Sure, daddy could've stayed home and allowed Sarah to flap her wings and fly. But the reality is, while the family lives in Juneau, daddy works on the North Slope -- hundreds and hundreds of miles away. So who's caring for and nurturing the child? A full-time nurse? One of the other children? Grandpa and Grandma? If it makes everyone here feel better, I'll stipulate that I think Daddy Palin is no great shakes, either. But I still think mom is the primary care-giver and millions of voters will agree with me.
I don't expect that my viewpoint will gather much support here on DU and that's neither here nor there. I won't waste MY time preaching to the choir. Where my viewpoint WILL gain traction is among the many conservative, pro-life, Family First types I see and talk to every day. And those are the people I need to persuade and motivate to vote Democratic.
Fair? I think so even if every other single person on this site does not. Politics ain't beanbag and the case I lay out is true. That's all that matters to me.
John
From a family of five kids myself. My pinko, NOW card-carrying feminist mother saw fit to stay home and care for us when we were infants. But I suppose Sarah Palin's got better things to do.

Hillary has worked all of her life to get where she is today and she worked her ass off to earn those 18million votes that she won in the primaries. And Sarah Palin says "Oh I'll take over from here"

93. Women, not woman. Learn some grammar please.
It's not just one woman but all of us women. I was offended when by suggesting that by being picked by a misogynistic piece of crap for the #2 spot in the country she was going to handily destroy the glass ceiling in which Hillary put 18M cracks. First of all, you're not automatically feminist just because you're a woman. It's entirely possible to be a misogynist and be a woman. It's also entirely possible for a man to be a feminist too. Secondly, the whole point of breaking the glass ceiling is using a woman's HARD WORK to break through it. That's what makes it a worthy endeavor. It is not some fucking trophy to be awarded us by the patriarchy. It is something that we fucking earn.

Just like black people were NOT the reason for why Obama gained his ascendancy (in case people forgot due to the long primaries, his first caucuses and primaries votes were from white middle class voters) and they had to be CONVINCED into voting for Obama, not all women automatically voted for Hillary. It is not that fucking simple. Obama's weathered attacks and criticism from all walks of life-- hell, a lot of the "disunity" of the Democratic party, which I personally love, is because we can't fucking shut up when it comes to discussing something. In this day and age of being politically correct, people who get their fucking feelings hurt just because someone criticizes you are too prone to saying that they were attacked. When people can't even take constructive criticism (it doesn't mean you can't cry or deny your bad feelings but it's stupid to say their criticisms are baseless), it means that nothing gets better and in all likelihood, it gets worse because no one learns from their mistakes and keeps repeating them.

Some of the attacks on Palin ARE going too far in my opinion but this all depends on the individual if it goes too far in their mind. But there are definitely good reasons for why she's such a fucking wrong pick for McCain and it's a disturbing cap to his misogynistic behavior. I can summarize his chauvinism here:

1) He came back from the Hanoi Hilton to see his former swimsuit model of a wife much shorter and heavier due to a car accident. He started screwing around on her and eventually married one of the women he cheated on his first wife with, Cindy. In his wife's words, he wanted to be 25 when he was 40. This is documented and McCain has confessed to that.

2) Apparently when Cindy jokes that he's getting a bit thin up there (bald), he retorts in front of a few press journalists that "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." This is currently alleged by an unofficial biographer and might or might not be true.

3) A female supporter asked about Hillary during one of McCain's town halls, "How do we beat that bitch?" McCain fucking LAUGHED in response to that. This is documented through many copies of video floating around YouTube and the web.

4) McCain voted against the equal pay for equal work bill. This is documented. He has no real defense for this position.

5) McCain volunteered his wife for the Miss Buffalo Chips contest which in previous years featured women flashing their boobs, simulating sexual acts and wet T-shirts. This is also documented in video. In McCain's defense, he possibly thought it was just a beauty contest (yeah, being held by a bunch of bikers) or at worst, a wet T-Shirt contest. But it's obvious how objectified his wife is that he offers her up with this panderrific move without even fucking asking her.

This is what I can think of off the top of my head. So yeah, this latest move and Palin's apparent complicity in his misogyny doesn't make me think highly of her as a woman or as an American. Make of it what you will.

112. What happened to your brain?
McCain has made a stunningly poor choice for a running mate. We need to pile on and push until they are running around screaming like headless chickens trying to fix their Palin problem.

This choice was made to a) shore up the fundaloon base, and b) make a play for the soccer mom vote. We DU'ers cannot do anything about the fundaloons, but we sure as hell can and will make it as clear as day why Sarah Palin is unacceptable to right-thinking women (and men of course.)

As usual, we get the brain-dead reaction here of sympathy for our opponents. Start looking for your brain, it obviously has fallen out of your head. It is gray/white and sort of gelatinous.
