It's hard to imagine that McCain didn't thoroughly vet Palin since her recent motherhood is one of the primary reasons she got picked. This theory isn't comparable to the Obama birth certificate smear. It's more on the order of X-Files, Area 51, Martian lizardmen are living under our sewer system type theories.

5. well, it seems he didn't do much vetting (but the baby theory is still bonkers)

all reports seem to indicate that he switched his decision to her quickly and that he didn't send anyone to Alaska to talk to anybody.

But the baby theory is silly. A DUer from Alaska (sorry, can't remember his/her username) posted the theory that she lied about leaking fluid in Texas and then making the speech and flying home to make the story more interesting and herself seem "tougher", when probably she just went into labor soon after she got home.
