Same-sex benefits ban gets Palin veto
By KYLE HOPKINS
Anchorage Daily News
Published: December 29, 2006

Gov. Sarah Palin vetoed a bill Thursday that sought to block the state from giving public employee benefits such as health insurance to same-sex couples.

In the first veto of an administration that isn't yet a month old, Palin said she rejected the bill despite her disagreement with a state Supreme Court order earlier this month that directed the state to offer benefits to same-sex partners of state employees.

-snip-

For supporters, the Supreme Court ruling was considered a victory for gay rights and civil liberties. To opponents, it equated same-sex partners with married couples, despite the state's ban on gay marriage.

Though I support the veto, I wonder how freepers will feel about it. What do my fellow DUers think?

1. I think she had another reason for doing that
Someone posted about it, but I'm don't recall what exactly the reason was.

3. I think they were issues with its compatibility with the state constitution.
She is vocal against same-sex marriage and has said she supports Alaska's constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. She is no friend to the gay community.

7. I do not think that she is a friend to the gay community,
but she still vetoed a bill that the religious right would strongly support.

9. She had no choice really
She vetoed the bill because it was in direct conflict with the Alaskan Supreme Court ruling that such a denial violated the State Constitution.

12. Even if the average McCain voter bothers to look that up, they will still be disapointed.
Rep. John Coghill, R-North Pole, sponsored the bill. In a phone interview Thursday night, he said that Palin, also a Republican, faced a constitutional dilemma but he's still disappointed by her veto.

"I would have like to have seen her stand up to the courts," Coghill said.

10. I think she vetoed it to avoid having court battles about it
From what I read, she had a long discussion with some advisers before vetoing it, and saying that it had to do with the constitutionality.

4. Good ammo. This is better than the baby thing.
This should be brought up in every "Palin is a wonderful person she's done a lot of good for Alaskans including allowing gay couples equal benefits, like they do in California, BUT she is not quite ready for prime time". This and this alone will get the fundies to stay home. It needs to be brought up during the debates. Biden must wrench it out of her. This is the best way to defeat McCain, go after his base. --and of course I support the veto, so she has one good point in her favor.

5. Perhaps she's more pragmatist than idealogue?
But here's a question. Why do we spend so much time worrying about the #2. McCain himself, and his alliance with the conservative wing of his party, is the real problem.

Until she's in a position to make a difference, Palin, her record and ideas are a largely a distraction.

8. Why do we spend so much time worrying about the #2.
It has nothing to do with her, it has to do with voters. If her voting record seems to conflict with republican values, they may be less excited about the ticket.

13. I hear you
it's like reading the tea leave, trying to figure out how it will play out. -- Plus for a lot of us, the minds of conservatives are really unfathomable, so trying to scrie the depths seems worthwhile.

But,admitting that I too am obsessed with the questions of "what was he thinking?" "how will this play out?" and "what's her thing?", I have to say that I and others like me, seem to have gone from focussing on our man Obama to fussing about this Palin person.

14. Well, she is something new for us to talk about. Our discussions may balance back out in a few days.
trying to figure out how it will play out.

This is fun for many of us.
