Obama/Biden is still going to win.
I think, far from being a plus, the selection of Sarah Palin will be a disaster. I was as stunned as everyone else at this choice. But really...does solely the selection of a VP swing an entire election?

I know the blatantly obvious reason Sarah Palin was selected. It was designed to appeal to women voters...in particular case, possible disenchanted former Hillary supporters who McCain's campaign believes hasn't fully come on board with Obama/Biden.

But...Sarah Palin does NOT support the same issues as Hillary. Sarah Palin is a polar opposite...on abortion, on GLBT rights...of Hillary Clinton.

Obama has said, I believe, on the choice of Sarah Palin, that she doesn't represent change. And he's exactly right. McCain/Palin is another Bush/Cheney. Ideologically. I firmly believe that the American people have had enough of the mean spirited, ideologically right wing kind of government we have had in the past 8 years. I keep thinking about that 80% of Americans who believe this country is headed in the wrong direction. That's hugely significant. And a McCain/Palin Administration would be going even farther down the wrong road.

What I see in Obama is that he is determined to win. With all due respect to Gore, to Kerry, I haven't seen that sheer determination to win in a long time. And this campaign is being run by smart, very capable people. And I think more and more that Joe Biden's selection was a brilliant one.

We can talk about Palin's utter lack of experience and ethical problems. I hope this is fully aired out in the media. I think the McCain people made a huge mistake selecting her.

I'm certainly not some wise, prescient campaign strategist. But after the past 24 hours...I still believe we'll win. It's as if a huge weight of doubt has been lifted.

1. No, you are right. There are pluses for McCain but far outweighed by minuses.
It was a completely boneheaded pick. It will swing the election... by swinging the door that much more open for Obama and closed for McCain.

2. Palin is at the peak of her popularity right now (or maybe yesterday).
The more she is known the less she will be seen as minimally acceptable as a VP. As that happens, McCain's judgment will seem worse and worse. This thing is terrible for them, and we don't have to do anything about it. It will happen on it's own.

You are right. Obama/Biden will win.

4. Um...
I feel completely the opposite. I had confidence before, but now I see an energized Republican base, now I see momentum from the Democrat convention being stopped dead in its tracks.. Everyone I talk to are now enthusastic about McCain/Palin. Most can't stand Biden and consider Obama a hypocrite for picking a pro-war/anti civil liberties Washington insider.

Sorry I see it in starkly different terms than you do. I was hopeful McCain would pick Liberman or Romney, anyone who would leave their base lethargic, now they're energized and McCain's momentum will only increase going into the conventions.

Sorry, but we're totally screwed.

Believe what you want to. I can only relate to what I see and hear. Hopefully wherever you are is different, but here in Florida it's all McCain.

10. Well, you're entitled to your opinion. Free speech and all.
But we DO refer to it as the Democratic Party around here. That is, acutal Democrats do.

5. What he gains in fundie enthusiasm
I think he'll lose even bigger with reasonable people on the fence. If ever there was proof of more of the same . . . or proof of his lack of good judgment, and it undercuts his putting country first theme. It's just too bizarre.

11. The GOP knows that it's going down.
The only thing it can do at this point is try to appear inclusive and fundamentalist Christian in order to try and retain some of its ignorant base.

That's all there is to this.

16. I agree this is a good thing for the democrats. As charismatic as Palin is - she
is very young and inexperienced. I for one cannot wait for the VP debates.

18. The problem with the VP debate is expectations.
Edited on Sat Aug-30-08 03:06 PM by terrya
Obviously, with her, the bar of expectations will be on the floor. As long as she doesn't sound like Miss South Carolina, rattling stupidly on and on about American education in that widely seen clip on YouTube, some in the media (like everyone on CNN) will say that Palin will have done better than expected.

Not that it matters, I guess. Biden will wipe the floor with her in that debate.

19. Biden doesn't have to wipe the floor with her, he should
just be Biden, down to earth and knowing the facts. Passion about what Bush/McSame have done to this country, as long as it's not directed at Palin. It's about McSame/Bush - if the Obama team are as smart as they've been up to now, Biden will play it right.

20. I'm not really sure how this is going to enfold.
So I can't say whether this was a hail Mary pass that the 'pubs will catch or fumble badly. If it works, then McCain could make this election too close for comfort (as if that isn't already the case).

While I don't think we should say that Obama/Biden is in the bag because of McCain's VP pick, the odds of McCain's gamble paying off are slim, and it could turn out that McCain has made one of the dumbest decisions ever in a campaign.
