Very difficult in primaparas- their bodies just don't know what to do, the hormonal changes have to start from scratch- but even then it can happen. Hell, there are cases of fathers sucessfuly breastfeeding.

Reglan and domperidone, both medications normally used for stomach issues, are widely used to start or boost lactation for breastfeeding adoptive mothers. Herbal treatments are also used (notably fenugreek,) though nipple stimulation alone, from the pump or baby, can be enough to get the process going.

Bottom line, lactation is not conclusive evidence of recent pregnancy.

It's more of a decision on our part to avoid teaching the baby to fixate orally for too long. We feed her while she's laying on our lap and talk to her while she eats. We want her to enjoy the experience of eating and talking.
