High Risk, High Yield Gamble by McCain |
|
Edited on Sat Aug-30-08 03:05 PM by kennetha
I think many folks on DU see the high risk part of McCain's gamble. I won't reiterate all that here. It's all been said many times and doesn't need repeating. But I don't think it's been stressed quite enough the potential high yield for McCain. Palin will soon occupy a very big spotlight. Either she's going to shine in that spotlight or she's not going to shine. If she shines then the effect on the public reception of her could be as powerful as the effect of Obama's own first moment in the national spotlight was on the public reception on him. After all, it was the very powerful keynote address he gave in 2004 when he was, after all, just a state legislator that first rocketed him to the attention of millions of Americans.
If Palin gives an acceptance speech with that much impact, then many of the pundits and editorial writers will eat their words and start to heap on compensating praise.
If she doesn't give a powerful acceptance speech, they will pile on and on. And the doubts will be magnified and McCain will suffer a huge blow.
Seldom does one speech -- especially a speech not delivered by the head of the ticket -- have that much potential to make an impact.
From what I've seen, Palin is nowhere near Obama's league -- even Obama circa 2004. But we will see what she does with her big moment. And that will decide a LOT about the character of this race. IT will decided wether a star is born or not. If not, we have it much easier. If a star is born, we have a tougher race.

2. She not only has to give a speech, she has to talk to the Sunday news shows, etc. etc. |
|
She is essentially unknown right now, which (along with her looks) is her greatest asset. As she gets known, the glow will fade.

Probably from something posted by the guy who's response reads "ignore" when I look at it. But that's just a guess.

16. Her speech will flop because it will be too scripted. |
|
Obama's speech came from his heart, and that's why it was so powerful.

18. I'm making no prediction whatsoever |
|
about the quality of her speech. I do suspect that it will be written by McCain's staff and not by Palin herself, that's for sure. I wasn't so impressed with what I saw of her first rally with McCain. So I'm not really expecting much. You never know though. Probably between now and whenever she delivers it at the convention, she will practice and practice and practice.
I think anything short of an Obama style tour de force (but of course in her own style) means that McCain has lost his gamble. He needs her to deliver and deliver big, I would think.
