I have to think a sizeable percentage of Republican women are pro-choice.... |
|
will this VP choice drive them to vote Obama or stay home?
Will seeing a vehemently pro-life woman on the ticket be a wake up call for these women?

1. Even before this choice, you were hearing many of them speak out |
|
against BombBomb. I think they may help with some fundies but drive the rational Repugs even further out of their own party.
LET'S HOLD MORE VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVES!

2. The 'no exceptions for rape and incest' thing especially is bad news for them. |
|
Don't know many outside of the hardcore fundies that feel that way.

and they need to be exposed as to how extreme their anti-abortion stance is.

9. Oh, it will be. Abortion might come up at the VP debate...it'll be very thorny for Biden... |
|
but he's a clever debater...if he can expose the extremity of her position, it might score some points.

3. And if pro-choice, likely not xtian fundy |
|
This may have been a step too far for them. It's fine by me of they just stay home or not vote the top of the ticket.
We may see a huge undervote this time around for the top of the ticket by Republican women.

4. The issue can't be too important to them, or they wouldn't be republicans |
|
In weighing the issues, they've already put reproductive rights below something else, like their own tax cuts if they are wealthy, or their hatred of gay people or fear of Muslims. I don't have high hopes that Palin will move the issue up in importance.
I read somewhere on DU that Palin is anti-birth control. I don't know that that's true or what it means. If it means that she wants to make the pill illegal, that might wake republican women up. If it means she thinks that pharmacists can refuse to dispense the morning after pill, they'll probably ignore it as not affecting themselves.

6. Not just pro-choice, anti-fundie |
|
I know many Repubs that are sick and tired of the fundies in their party and will now probably stay home instead of voting at all...

I'm pro-life. For me. For my family.
But for every other woman in America? I'm for the Right to Privacy. And under that Right - it's none of my freaking business what anyone else does when she's in her doctor's office.
So - do I belong in the Democratic Party? You betcha. :-) I hold out hope beyond hope that we will one day have a health care system which provides safe, effective birth control for women ON DEMAND. If a thirteen year old goes to a dispensary and says she's going to have sex - then regardless of what her parents say . . . let's prevent an unwanted pregnancy and keep her and her potential child from living a life in poverty.
So I dunno. Many of those Republican women are against socialized Medicine in the U.S. They might be thinking, "Hey - I have to make a trade off. If I don't want Nationalized Health Care then I can't have abortion on the table."
Somehow - I think my trade-off makes much better sense.

10. While not necessarily pro-choice in the truest sense, many of them are not as rabidly ANTI-choice |
|
as Palin is. Moderates aren't going to be thrilled about it.
