Exciting news from the reddest most repuke county in Texas
I was looking thru Obama's website to see if there was anything local I could get involved in.

I found a Saturday morning get together that was to talk about voter registration. Included in the meeting was someone from my county's election office who would be there to swear in/sign up people to be deputize voter registrars .
I went, not sure of how many people would be there, given my county's history of going 70-30 repuke for the last 8 years. Our Dem caucus and county convention attendences were historic, but it still amazing to see so many county Dems in one place!

Pulled into the parking lot and it was PACKED. Had to drive around twice to find a parking spot. It was held in a building that is obviously a place where Monday thru Friday offices are so I knew it was not employees or clients there on a Saturday morning.

Inside it was **literally standing room only.** They had a Precinct Development Training session that was just finishing up and then the Voter Registration - Deputizing was about to begin. People from the first meeting stayed over for the second and more people were showing up after I got there for the second meeting.

Everyone in the room was sworn in to be voter registrars! So now they (and myself) can now register people to vote! They talked about the difference between non partisan and partisan voter registration drives, the responsibilites of being a county deputy voter registrar. How you don't even have to actually hold an official "drive", you can just register people on your own if you find someone who is not registered. Encouraged us to get involved on a precinct level.
How cool is that?? Bringing someone from the county election office to **us**!! Have they thought of everything or what!!??!!

Everyone was really involved/interested, asking alot of questions. Asking if they could use their new deputizing ability asap or if they had to wait for the card to kick in and be processed. We just filled out a brief application and with it we got our own deputy registrar ID card to show people.

One lady who went to Denver said that the one thing that was emphasized for people to share back at their local levels was "RVV": "Register, Verify, and VOTE"!

Anyhow, sorry to ramble, but it was pretty damn encouraging to see this in the reddest pocket of Texas!! I'm gonna look for some events on the website between now and November where I can help out with voter registration, etc. :-)

2. I am telling you, if we "lose" again, this time people will take to the streets. It will be
the most blatant theft yet, and plenty of people will recognize it as such.

4. thanks for the wonderful news
a bluer texas would go a long way towards uncovering so much of what has been happening the last few years. Just having
the trial for DeLay would be a great help, trial date???, crickets chirp.

10. I will!! They've already picked some huge gatherings to do drives
Edited on Sat Aug-30-08 05:30 PM by rainbow4321
Ozzfest---concert attendence: 30,000 people

In September there will be Plano Balloon Festival-- weekend long event and expected attendence is 70,000!

The woman from the election office said her workers are starting to see deputy registrars bring in larger stacks of registration cards. Earlier in the summer deputy registrars would bring 3 or 4 at a time and now the stacks are getting larger as we get closer to November and more drives are held.

11. Oh, you do not know how it thrills this native Texan's heart to hear that!
I gave up on Texas many, many years ago when I went off to college in the northeast. I never returned to live there. This is just so great and I am so happy that you are experiencing it.

Please keep delivering these inspiring posts to us. Please know we appreciate them!

13. Great news! I'm gonna get involved, too!
I was for Kucinich, and was considering voting for Nader until the double whammy of Obama's speech + McCain's insulting and tokenistic VP choice. Shit, I even like Hillary now.

Texans for Obama!
