OK, he served in the military, so did a lot of elected officials, so did a lot of unfortunates who are scoping out a park bench to sleep on tonight.

You didn't hear THEM prefacing every speech, back in '04, with a brief kudos to the military bravery of John Kerry; in fact, they MOCKED IT, they SHAT UPON IT!

Now, I'm not saying that McCain's stint in 'Nam should be equally dissed but is there some requirement to pay some form of tribute to this guy who's CURRENT mission is to further the Neocon/Christian Right agenda???

1. Think of it as a relatively painless innoculation against howls of
lunatic RW shills...

13. Good point, BUT...
...at the end of the day, they're STILL lunatics, focused on viewing our side as Satan's superior rival. So, whether we praise his war record or his accomplishments in the Senate, all they're hearing is, "WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE!!!!" Just sayin'...

2. I think they should just leave it out. Just don't mention it.
Lean right into McCain's policies.

4. It's getting old.
I'm so tired of hearing it. We know, we know, you honor his service.

3. You have to prop them up before you knock 'em down.

5. I agree, but,
as a more leftist leftist, I find his "service" in the war against Vietnam immoral to begin with, and certainly nothing to be proud of.

8. Indeed,
but it's middle America we need to think about. No use giving them extra ammo when it's relatively easy to go through the motions. I know it's unfair, but there are many of stupid voters out there...

9. I agree, but the comment is not targeted at us.
It's targeted at people who do respect his service, to show you can respect someone's sacrifice and still be vehemently opposed to their policies. That's why McCain keeps playing the POW card. It's all he really has. If we are seen as disrespecting his patriotism, a sizable segment of the population will be offended and he'll gain sympathy points.

12. I know...
It's just so disappointing to be continually reminded how stupid people seemingly are.

10. Think of it as a setup to 'we owe him our gratitude, but not our vote."

11. I'm so sick of hearing it. I don't think he deserves that kind of deference any more.
