Time to address this far out possibility... a second RNC Convention may need to be convened |
|
McCain has his own problems with credibility, and his choice of Palin is undercutting his credibility even further.
Top Repub Party Officials are bound to be in a frenzy over events since McCain announced Palin as his VP.
If Palin withdraws, a replacement could be easily named.
BUT ... if McCain were to suffer some kind of physical crisis that would interfere with his serving as PResident if elected there would have to be another RNC Convention to name a replacement Nominee.
And that possibility could 'please' quite a few of the top Repub Dogs --throwing the nomination open to the floor, and opening the door to a wide ranging group of ambitious Repubs.
IT could be total choas -- and you know who could benefit from that? (GIve your own answer)

1. They couldn't afford it. |
|
They don't have time or money to get a new candidate.

The poster above is correct. If you remember about two months ago the Repukes were running way behind in collecting money for their conventions. Much comes from corporations. With the tight economy and falling profits corporations are belt tightening and not spending much on anything. They are cutting.
Couple that with now that the convention is open I believe McCane must accept the nomination within so many days and then he is on public financing.
In addition, the newsrooms cannot afford to cover another convention. They are already complaining how high the costs were for this one.

4. No Possibility Of This |
|
I assume that Republican party rules provide that if something happens to the nominee after the convention, the Republican National Committee names the replacement nominee. Democratic party rules probably provide for the same thing.

5. Generally, a party will have an emergency convention. |
|
Maybe somebody else knows the specific rules for the Republican party, but I'm pretty sure that is what would happen.

7. To my knowledge this has never happened before... but it could... |
|
McCain could suffer a heart attack and keep the nomination because the recovery process could eventually return him to fitness to serve.
However, if McCain were to suffer a condition(ie. stroke) that affects his mental faculties, I doubt the named VP Choice would be the Party Nominee on the ticket --not having run in any primaries or picked up any delegate votes.
There would have to be another process other than a backroom designation of a replacement.

8. It would be done at party level, like with Eagleton. |
|
The DNC has mechanism for naming a new candidate, I think the Dem. Nat'l committee in '72 voted to accept Shriver after Eagleton was yanked. I'm sure the pubbies have a similar mechanism.

9. Eagleton was a VP Choice NOT a Party Nominee... |
|
... I don't know the answer, but it sure would be a power struggle within the Repub Party BigWigs if they had the power to name McCain's replacement on the ballot.

if McCain is unable to continue, the RNC simply appoints a replacement. Rules of succession do not apply unless he had been elected.
