I think Sarah Palin is done
It is now almost insanity for the Republicans to continue with her being on the ticket. Too much baggage and too many major controversies. The horrible thing is that she is not even well known.

In my opinion when ABC News picks up the AIP story as their main headline, you would think the rethugs are now trying to undermine Sarah Palin and force McCain to drop her from the ticket.

1. You wonder, though.
Will the fundies demand their money back?

2. I hope they keep her on the ticket for awhile longer, though.
She's a fun thing to play with, like a dead mouse to a cat.

4. The only thing is...
Unlike the Harriet Miers (sp?) situation, Repukes have more or less sang the same talking point tune about how great she is since Friday afternoon.

I don't see her stepping aside. She is a typical Repuke, and obviously what is going on in her family doesn't matter, or she would not have accepted McCain's offer.

part of me hopes they don't. McSame pressed the easy button for us and that would be nice for a change.

9. Is there a "reasonable" woman candidate McSame could pick that the Talibornagains will like?
She steps down because the attention is "causing her daughter emotional distress" (which will almost certainly be her excuse), and then McSame picks someone more sensible, but still palitable to the Fundies...

They play us (liberal bloggers/media) as the bad guys for beating up a woman trying to break the highest, hardest glass ceiling in the nation (the Vice-Presidency), and McSame waltzes up with someone better in every respect.

Is there such a person? It would be my guess on how they're going to try to get out of this mess. How fundie acceptable is Kay Bailey Hutchison? I have to admit I don't know much about her.

14. I can hear James Dobson now..
"The Liberal Media, who clearly wants an Obama victory, demonizes Sarah Palin and her poor daughter, for having a problem that is epidemic in American families today. I guess they're upset she just didn't have an abortion."

Nope...they'll ride it out and try to whip up a backlash. Whether they'll succeed is another subject.

I thinke there's another calculus as well. Let's say Palin goes Eagleton on them, and they go to plan B (I'll guess Pawlenty). Now McSame is branded as someone who had the poor judgement to pick an unsustainable veep. I think they'll gamble that Troopergate can be made to go away and Babygate will lose its novelty by October.

That said, I think reminding folks that McSame is 72 and a cancer survivor is not inappropriate.

15. Nope.
She's fires up the crazies and makes them open their wallets. McCain has basically given up on the independents and are going to try to win this thing with the fundies. Good luck with that Mac.

16. They will hold on to her
They've moved too far with her now. They can't afford to drop her. They'll just go with their standard double talk and
most of the stuff will slide off of her like she's teflon coated. The media will be afraid to hold her feet to the fire and
the conservative base has too much at stake now and they'll be really pissed if he drops her.

I guess I wouldn't place any money on it, but I think they'll try to stay with the choice. They are used to getting their way and they have not had to back down for many years. Their heads are so big that they probably still think this Palin will fly. Maybe I'll be proven wrong in 24 hours but...

25. She was a member of the Alaska Independence Party in the 90s
That group apparently seeks complete independence and nationhood status for Alaska.

I got that directly from their website. If you go to the ABC News homepage it is their main headline.

....from the Daily Kos, here is a quote from Joe Volger (an AIP leader in the recent past) who said: "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."

Palin wishes to run the nation, but belonged to a group that wants to be removed from the nation. There was even mention of doing a treaty with Russia to protect AK from the US! And to think that a bit ago, I was joking about how funny it would be to put Sarah Palin up against some dead eyed guy like Putin and watch her flounder. I didn't realize then that it would be more likely that she'd slink back home with a freaking defense treaty for the country of Alaska in her hand.

She spoke to the group this year, has never severed ties completely. Part of their idea is to get their members into either of the two parties and work their angle that way. Palin stopped being a member on the rolls when she first ran for mayor as a Republican.

The link to more than you want to know about AIP at daily kos (left my mouth hanging open, to think about the implications):

You just can't make this stuff up any better. It is frightening to me that Palin is seeking to be the VP now.

28. If she spoke to this group and still maintains her ties, then she is absolutely done
The objectives of the Alaskan Independence Party are very clear.

This now makes me question her motives to sue the federal gov for listing polar bears as endangered species.
