10 Reasons Why Sarah Palin is the "Right" Choice
I will list the many reasons I can think of Sarah Palin as the right choice. Mind you, these are not qualifying reasons for the post she seeks to fill, but reasons nonetheless that will resonate with a wide swath of voters. Now those voters probably wouldn't vote for Obama anyway, but if it weren't for Palin, they wouldn't bother making the effort to vote for McCain either.

My perspective, I think is unique. I am married to a man who has introduced me to the outdoors. Even though I'm a immigrant woman of color, I've been camping, winter-camping, snow-mobiling, ice-fishing, etc, even entered some contests where I've won, so I can hang with the boys, and I'm privy to the attitudes of the kind of guys that are sometimes dismissed as rednecks. A few are, but that's a story for another day.

Moreover, I grew up attending many kinds of protestant churches, and most recently a megachurch. I will tell you about certain themes in that kind of setting can easily be woven around Sarah Palin. In no particular order, here are some reasons why she works, and I have a bet (money) with BlooInBloo that she will remain the Veep choice.

  • "She is hardcore." So says my husband, WRT to Palin's outdoorsy cred and I agree. For people who fish and hunt, (yes, I know most of you disagree with hunting), a woman who has the skills to handle herself outdoors gets respect. In fact, a guy whose wife can do those things right alongside him has bragging rights.

  • A woman, "for such a time as this". For those of you unfamiliar with the biblical story of Esther, here's the skinny. When a king of Persia deposed his disobedient wife, he basically held a beauty contest to find his next wife. The one he eventually chose turned out to be an orhpan young woman who hid her Jewish heritage for fear of persecution. One day, her uncle Mordecai overheard a plot to kill the king, and prevailed upon her to act. The king's life was saved, and the traitor, who by the way was among those wanting to exterminate the Jews, was hung. In return, the king published a decree to protect the Jews. Moral of the story: Esther thought herself unqualified, but her uncle basically said so what? Who knows if God brought you this opportunity to be queen "for such a time as this"?

  • As such, it can be inferred that a comparatively unqualified woman in our day, may have the opportunity to put the country in the right path. She will be mentored by "Uncle John", the present-day Mordecai, and supported by advisors who know what's right, and will guide her in making the right choices, should McCain become incapacitated or worse.

  • "A virtuous woman" for the fundamentalist Christians. They may not like the fact that she works outside the home, but she did have 5 kids, and did not get rid of the one who wasn't perfect.

  • "A Proverbs 31 woman" for the neoconservative Christians. These are the type you are more likely to find in evangelical circles. They are not, for the most part, the pentecostal/assembies of God types, and are believers in women working outside the home. In fact, the proverbs 31 woman is a model of a woman who manages her home and a business well.

  • Evangelical women's movement. Yes there is one (actually several). This reminds me of the Biblical passage in 1st or 2nd Timothy about people who get carried away by itching ears, following every fad. There are a lot of women-oriented literature, retreats and conferences both for Evangelical women and those in more traditional denominations. This is an outgrowth of name-it-and-claim-it preachers, whose wives and female associates usually run these side movements to make women feel empowered. To this set of women, Sarah Palin is the epitome of a victorious woman, who is able to balance her commitment to her family and work, despite personal setbacks.

  • Affirmative action. People on the right often say unqualified minorities are put forward by affirmative action, but do not recognize that white women constitute the largest group of beneficiaries. In fact, people of color often have to be BETTER, instead of simply as good as their white or male counterparts to get to top posts. As more of Palin's history surfaces, we see a cunning politician who clawed her way to the top, while wearing a charming smile on her face. Witness also the prevailing prototype of female anchors. They're all in their late 20s to mid 30s, tall, photogenic, etc. Few Asians, and the Hispanic ones are white or lighter-skinned Hispanics.

  • Media narrative of white victims. This is related to the point above. To watch TV these last few years, you would think that the only people who ever go missing or get kidnapped, killed or otherwise victimized are white women and girls. The occasional boy or minority child gets sympathy, too but all the recent legislation enacted after children's murders were named after young white girls.

  • She's anti-abortion, but pro-contraception. There has been talk that she opposes sex ed, but truth be told, her actual answer to the questionnaire is that she doesn't support EXPLICIT sex education. I'm not sure where she draws the line, but I think a lot of women are willing to wait to find out.

  • Her son is going to Iraq. No, it's not a qualification, but they can point to Cindy Sheehan who speerheaded a branch of anti-war advocacy into a run agains Pelosi, the #3 person in line for the presidency.

2. We can; that's why ridiculing her won't work. We have to fight MSM triviality with substance
