I gather Lieberman was effective
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 10:16 PM by Onlooker
I watched Thompson (who I thought was so-so), but I couldn't bare to watch Lieberman. From the tone of the posts here, am I right that he was effective? How effective was he in terms of helping McCain or hurting Obama among Republicans and Independents? Any thoughts?

3. I don't know--how "effective" is stringing together cliches and hackneyed
applause lines in a whiny schoolmarm voice?

4. It wasn't effective
It made Democrats angry, Repukes applauded as if they were in bizarro world, and I suspect "independents" couldn't care less about what Joe LIEberman says about John McCain.

6. He did actually get Republicans to applaud Bill Clinton
Bill Cliinton! Applauded! At a Republican convention! I think I feel the earth reversing it's rotation.

16. I bet those that did applaud
weren't listening and when the APPLAUSE light came on they clapped regardless of who was saying what.

Dickheads.

Peace

The Senator's constituents (me included) refer to him as Senator Droopy Dog.

9. well of course Lieberman would get applause at the GOP convention by saying he was voting for InSane
but if InSane had tried to nominate him he would have been challenged on the floor.

13. His tone
didn't sound like it had much conviction behind it. It's like he gave the speech but it didn't sound like he was sure he wanted to say what he was saying.

He's the Tokyo Rose of the 2008 political battle.

24. I don't know how any respectable conservative could trust Lieberman
He is a slime ball that proved he has no real beliefs or ideology, he is only interested in political expediency. I would have at least had some respect for a person that says I have decided to support the democrats or I support the republicans, if the truly believe that the other party is representing their current values better than the other. But what Lieberman did was just spineless. I would consider him a snake in the grass. I wouldn't be surprised if sometime down the road he does another switcharu this time to the republicans. So I just can't see how a true conservative/republican could actually trust this man.

28. I thought they were all horrible
I try to have a balanced perspective on how things will play to a large audience, and most of my sportsbook friends are conservatives. But tonight bombed, as far as I was concerned. It was more begging than persuasive.

Lieberman's only advantage was going last. He was less awkward than Thompson and smiled throughout.

The GOP's only edge in general is having the second convention. If the Democratic speeches followed these it would be clear cut which ones were superior. But it's like a race track where the feature race is followed by a claiming race and you leave the track impressed with the lousy horse that just won the final event you saw.
