So do the Amish consider themselves poverty stricken re. Pretzel Girl |
|
- she referred to herself as Amish and growing up in poverty. I'm not being sarcastic, I thought this was an interesting statement.

5. Maybe I'm hearing things, but she said "I was that little Amish girl..." |
|
in reference to her vignette.

3. Then she went from poverty to prosperity |
|
due to her faith in God.
'Cause her Amish parents were atheists and all.
But anyway, prosperity isn't about money, it's about community. Which she never experienced as a child growing up Amish.

4. No they DO NOT consider themselves poverty stricken |
|
As a matter of fact they do quite well financially. (I grew up in Lancaster County, PA and my Dad worked in construction with the Amish).
Think about it: No electricity bills No gas costs They make their own clothes They grow/raise most of their own food Own their own businesses (some of the women will work outside the home but not very often)
No, the Amish are not poverty stricken.

7. She invalidated her entire message. I'm still trying to |
|
figure out what the hell she was trying to say... that being raised by genuine people of faith left her in poverty, but then she cooked up some pretzels and prayed to god and she was rewarded financially, but then she added that money doesn't matter... I'm spinning...

live without electricity, meaning no telephones, no TV, no internet, and they raise their own food and make their own clothes, doesn't mean they live in poverty. We citizens of the modern world tend to equate those things with poverty, but do so wrongly.
(As an aside, in my family we've taken up referring to "having an Amish Christmas" as meaning we're going to make gifts for each other, not buy them.)
