Palin said "haberdasher," now if she called me a "chiseler" I might be offended
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 04:35 PM by Wetzelbill
Seriously, people in small towns really don't talk like that. I'm a fricking farm hick from Montana, the only people I know who talk like that are in movies who have their dialogue written for them by people who think they know what a hick or redneck sounds like. You might have an eclectic, folksy phrase or two, sure, but people who purposesly make it a point to say "haberdasher" are usually doing so for reasons that are not authentic. Like say, trying to create a false image or persona for political purposes.

You know, it's fun to play dress up and imitate the "regular folks" but where's the policy? I haven't heard one word about how Republicans plan to fix the economy, for example. Nothing viable anyway. I got a couple folksy phrases I learned back home on the farm that reminds me of the Republican Party and this convention so far. "All hat and no cattle" and "All show and no go."

Come up with solutions, no slogans. Let's hear about policy, not fantasy.

Here is what I want to know:

How is John McCain going to get us out of the messes that he helped get us in?

I'm positive he doesn't have any answers.

1. It's funny you mention that. When I heard the word, I kinda squinted.
I haven't heard that word in years, if not ever used. Maybe an O'Henry short story.

4. It's ridiculous
Their impression of small town people is so condescending. Maybe some Dems might actually be elitist, but, please, the GOP exploits small town voters with so much propaganda, it's just bullshit. No comparison. It's why they freaked out when Huckabee started winning a little. The GOP establishment wasn't too folksy when they thought a guy who cooked up squirrels in a popcorn popper might actually get their nomination.

2. Umm... What's a 'hasbrodasher'?
Is that some sort of board game?

Sounds like elite-speak to me.

3. Get this irony
A haberdasher is a purveyor of notions. Not the exact definition, but that's basically what it means. The GOP, you can't make this stuff up, lol.

7. Amazing.
I do know what it means and I haven't heard it in years and I'm not sure I've ever heard it used in an
every day context.

What do you think it means as used?

10. I've seen a few others
mention the Harry Truman thing. It is also aomeone who sells men's clothing and he did that. They're trying to point out and puff up her experience. Harry Truman sold men's clothing and he became VP! Yeah, but he was also senator for ten years. That's like saying Ronald Reagan was an actor and completely leaving out that he was governor of California or something. It's stupid. They want to make it sound like Barack Obama went from being a community organizer straight to running for president, while she was a mayor and a governor and now she's a VP candidate. Just stupid.

12. I've also noticed how they don't mention Obama's time in the State Govt.
Not once.

13. only to dismiss it
They are fond of saying he voted present over 100 times, while overlooking that McCain has missed over 250 votes in the last two years. But they have taken to not even mentioning at all lately, you're right on that. Palin never mentions it, she can't. They never mention anything about Obama's career at all. Not his law degree, his teaching etc. They focus on the community organizer and once in awhile I see a disparaging remark about him writing books. I guess Obama can go ahead and write more books so that Palin can ban them when she goes back to Alaska.

5. I think she was referring to Harry Truman
I thought she was talking about her father at first, but then I realized she was talking about Truman's job in the 20s running a men's department store.

8. this is the new Neocon meme
I heard in on a call-in show yesterday: Palin was a small-town mayor, but Truman was a haberdasher! (True, but he was also senator from Missouri for 10 years before becoming VP).

I wonder if they know just what a haberdasher is? I haven't heard the word in years.
