|
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 06:20 AM by amyrose2712
I am going into a right leaning office today.. I am not very good at debating(i get shaky and upset) Any advice when dealing with people who just listen to the speech and believe what they say and never do any research and when i give facts,i am told that "is my TRUTH! Everyone believes differently" I don't know how to respond to that

Don't say anything. You'll be gloating in victory a few months from now.

2. Ask them how they plan to pay for their $12,000 health insurance |
|
policy with McCain's $5,000 tax credit. They'll need to know since he's wants to take the tax deduction away from employers so many will be tossing health insurance as a benefit.

Choose your words carefully, and if they persist in rubbing your nose in their convention high, or spewing their party's unsubstantiated (or completely false) talking points, feel free to draw attention to the HYPOCRISY of their party leaders.

6. if you're not conmfortable jousting with them and |
|
you're outnumbered, don't bother. If they prod you, tell them you won't debate them until they educate themselves on their own candidate and not just blindly absorb every word out of their mouths.

and say, "You can have your own opinion, but you can't have your own truth."
With numbnuts like this, I find it best to come up with a few well-placed zingers (try to think of them ahead of time) and avoid extensive debate.
See if you can work "Caribou Barbie" into the conversation.
Ask why she's gone back to Alaska immediately. When they say she has to send her son off, look knowing, say Uh Huh, and roll your eyes.
The trick is, don't get mad. Just be a smartass. It will be easier to do this if you focus on the fact that we have a smart, intelligent, compassionate nominee and they nominated an old geezer and a beauty queen.

19. Why debate at all? When Ted Stevens got indicted, Faux Noise described him as a Democrat; and that |
|
is not the first time it has done something like that. There is no such thing as everyone's own truth. There is only THE truth, lies and opinions. The people in your office obviously cannot tell the difference and never will. They are the people the Pubs count on to be uninformed and unthinking. Why waste your time and upset yourself daily?

You can't those people's. Those are not people who are willing to change position. It's a political maxim that you don't waste your time trying to convince people who won't change.
If you want to persuade people, look for people who are undecided or who support Obama but don't always vote. They'll be more receptive to your information.
And, as far as information goes, remember that most people want it to be kept very, very simple. For instance, tell them, "Obama has promised to cut taxes for everyone but the very rich and promised to end the war in Iraq." And if they challenge you, try to find something short for them to read or view.

She supports McCain. I've worked with those type of people a lot.
If she was undecided, she'd tell you that she'll probably vote for Obama.
Ignore her unless she likes talking politics, in which case, don't talk candidates, but talk hot button issues like women's rights, gay rights, and whether the government should help the poor. If she commits to progressive points of view, then simply urge her to compare the candidates without directing her. If she comes to her own decision, that's best.
If you're friendly with her and there's an Obama event or party going on in your area, invite her.

14. There are a couple of people in my office that I have had to stop talking politics with at all. |
|
I've just told them that I would rather not get into that discussion with them since we disagree so strongly that the only thing that will be accomplished is to make us both angry. Then stick to it and don't let them drag you into that conversation. My experience has been that some people don't want to discuss the issues, they just want to verbally beat up on someone.

Anyone sharing my cynicism on the general issue, though?
